Cigars

From the Australian Border Force website:

Travellers arriving in Australia

As a traveller, you can bring tobacco products with you into Australia if you’re aged 18 years or older.

You do not need a permit to bring in tobacco products into Australia as a traveller.

You’re allowed to bring in duty-free:

  • one unopen packet of up to 25 cigarettes or 25 grams of other tobacco products; and
  • one open packet of cigarettes.

If you bring in tobacco you must:

  • declare any tobacco you have with you above the duty free allowance
  • pay all relevant duty and taxes that apply on arrival into Australia.

If you bring more tobacco than the duty free allowance, you will need to pay duty on all of your tobacco, not just the amount above the allowance.

ABF officers will tell you how much duty you must pay when you arrive in Australia. The amount of duty you pay depends on the amount of tobacco you are bringing in.

If you do not declare the tobacco you have with you above the duty free allowance, you might be prosecuted or have your visa cancelled.

Duty free allowances apply to visitors, Australian residents, Airline or Ship Crew Members.

If you want to bring in more than 1.5 kg of chewing tobacco or snuff you will need to get permission from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Are cigars sold in Australia?  Can I ship the cigars to my hotel?

Where can I get the information?

Most cruise lines have an outside area for smoking and some still have a cigar/cigarette room

They are certainly sold 8n Australia, can’t think of much (other then particular brand names and not many of those either) you can get in America but not in Australia. Sure smoking isn’t as common as it once was, but I’d guess that there is still a tobacconist in most shopping centres, though they have had to branch out into gifts and nick nacks as well.

As Mr Gut said, cigars are available for sale in Oz. That is all I know about them. I guess you could google tobacconists or cigar shops in Sydney.

We also have very strict laws against indoor smoking in public spaces — restaurants, bars, shops, etc.  This is also applied on cruise ships based from Australia. So, the normal cigar lounges are not allowed to operate, there is no smoking in the casinos or wherever else smokers would smoke.

So, smoking out in the great open air is the option.

I know there is a cigar shon The Strand Arcade that runs between George St and Putt Street Mall, its George Street end. Also there used to be one in Martin Place, but havent been near there for a while, so no guarantee it’s still there, Woolworths and Coles Grocery stores sell cigarettes and used to sell a small range of Cigars but no idea if they still stock cigars, as did many pubs and bottle shops, but as smoking decreases I am not sure how many still do, but google Cigar Shop Sydney and I suspect you will ge5 a reasonable list of options.

  • 2 weeks later...

I tried contacting the Australian consulate in Washington D.C. left a message but have not heard back. This is super frustrating. I am trying to do the right thing.

We are on Princess and leave out of Sydney.

Australian rules seem harder than Singapore and China 😞

We are very picky with what we smoke- has to be mild and little flavor

I wonder how much would the duty be for a box of 20  Cigars?

Wow I tried reading and understanding the site above but all I get is that it would cost more than the box of cigars which is $100. Am I correct?

The 1000 is per box??  That is crazy!!

yes, some of our rules are tougher. But, unlike Singapore, you can chew gum here.

The import taxes are deliberately high as part of the reduction of tobacco use strategies. Added to that, cigars are nowhere near as popular here as they are in the US.

The limits are also strict, and enforced. $$$$$$

Perhaps you could online search, or email, some of tobacconists in Sydney to see if they sell what you are after.

If they are under 8 grams it’s about $1 each, if they are over 8gm over $1200 a kg.

so a box of 100 small cigars (about cigarette size, under 8 grams each) would be $100, if they are over 8 gram each, it’s by weight, so $1000 plus.

it comes down to what you smoke, how desperately you need them, and what the total cost is buying them there and paying duty or buying them in Australia.
