I will be heading to the Horizon Court on my next cruise because i want to grab a quick bite to eat then get off the ship for a couple of hours to explore Vancouver. Will be back on board shortly before all aboard time 😀

They really had a great stir fry with vegetables and noodles.   Also like their vegetable fried  rice.

For a quick bite, I'd head to the International Café to have a panini or quiche and some of the watermelon or Greek salad.

The Dining Room or, if we are late and miss the MDR lunch, Alfredo's (on the too few ships that have Alfredo's).  If the ship doesn't have an Alfredo's then the International Cafe.  In other words, we avoid the buffet at all costs on embarkation day.

The Royal's buffet is very large. On boarding day every section will be open. You really have to walk through all the different sections to find what you might enjoy. In addition to the buffet area you might find one of the other casual locations to your liking. These include:

The pizza and burger locations by the lido pool

International Cafe in the Piazza, deck 5

Alfredo's on deck 6 in the piazza. Sit down no charge waiter served individual pizzas and other menu items.

The DR is also open, usually noon to 1:30, but it could be slightly different times.

We always debate about where to have our first meal and we usually end up in the buffet.  The buffet on the Royal Class ships is pretty darn good, for a buffet.   We try to get on early, stop in at the IC for a coffee and a quick dessert, then we go to our room to drop off our stuff.  Then we head to the buffet to eat lunch.

 

The very first time we cruised they had a seafood buffet on sailaway day.  It was the Caribbean Princess.

You might wish to rethink this. When you board in Vancouver, you go through US Immigration (assuming an Alaska cruise) since the rest of the cruise is all US ports. This makes boarding a bit hectic. Just something to think about. I would drop your luggage and explore before boarding.

Lots of food options in HC on the Royal, items that appeal to anyone and everyone.

The minute we step aboard a Royal Class ship, we head to Alfredo's. Since we can't access our cabin until they are cleaned and  open, we are toting our carry-on luggage and know from experience that Horizon Court will be chaotic with luggage and slightly confused passengers searching for a table while balancing their plates. By the time we finish lunch, the cabins are open and we might be able to get into an elevator. So much more relaxing. We have done MDR on those ships without a dedicated Alfredo's.

Our tradition is to grab a slice of pizza, a beer, and then take a picture of it to send to our winter-stranded friends back home. Probably evil, but fun...

Another vote for the MDR. Every cruise since our very first one.

We grab a table, order iced tea and watch the world go by.

After 13 cruises, I still haven't done buffet on first day. It's crazy up there. Main dining room or International Cafe.

The buffet is a great way to get a lunch & not have to spend an hour or more in the DR.

Plenty of choices & not crowded if you get there early.

Since most passengers head to the buffet we believe the smart choice is the MDR. Never had a bad meal here on embarkation. Also since we always try to board early, the Main Dinning Room is empty, gives us a chance to talk to the staff.  Talking the the Dinning Room Manager working always seems to set a get tone for the rest of the trip.

We love the Princess Pizza. We just cruised Carnival the first time in 19 yrs and it didn't compare to Princess.
