We took the train.  Super simple.  Took us 45 minutes to get to King's Cross from the airport.  Then you can either transfer to a station closer to your hotel or take a taxi.  You don't have to go all the way to King's Cross, but for us our hotel was right across the street and it was perfect.

It is not unusual to see people with luggage in the underground.  Pretty common actually.

We've been to London twice, stayed in two different areas of the city, and still found the train from the airport to our hotel the best way to go.

London hotels do not offer shuttles. We always take LHR Express to Paddington Station - most passengers are hauling luggage. Since we always book a hotel in the Paddington area, this is a fast, efficient way to get into London....15 to 20 minutes depending upon which terminal you arrive at LHR. In my younger days, I took the train, but now find hauling luggage up and down escalators too much a challenge to the underground system....thus LHR Express.  Buy the tickets 90 days out for the best rates.

At Paddington, there are lots of cabs lined up along one side street if your hotel is a distance away.

We used Blackberry Cars for airport transfer from LHR to central London hotel and then again from central London to Southampton.  Excellent service, drivers and cars, great prices and would highly recommend. Very easy to get quotes and book on line.

We have decided that It is too much for us to be schlepping our cruise luggage off and on public transportation, and then when you get to either the train or bus station you still need to get a taxi or Uber to your hotel, so we found car service to be a great option.
