Our insurance claim and results

I missed this thread when it came out last week. I've heard of lots of golf injuries... most were from leaning into the trunk to lift a heavy set of clubs out. Latest one a friend was hurt when he crashed his golf cart into a tree after too many visits to the drink cart. Dangerous sport.

Glad to hear the insurance paid off fairly hassle free. We always get the insurance. I could assume the risk of lost cruise fare myself (self insure). It would pay off over time to skip buying it if I missed even 1 in 10 cruises. Where I can't see not having it is if there were significant other travel expenses, or the unexpected Medical issue on a trip. Hearing about medical evacuation costs, and cost for visiting the ship's doctor or an out of country Dr make it too scary not to have coverage.  .

BTW:   A year ago I broke my foot pretty badly on the first night of our week long Brilliance cruise.  You sure learn a lot about being wheel chair bound on a cruise ship in a hurry!  😮   Not the cruise we planned, but we did stay on board and had as much fun as we could on a limited basis.  At least you had your injury before you boarded.  Could have been worse!

Did you receive any compensation from Royal?  When dw broke foot on Mariner they covered all medical costs and gave her two free cruise certificates.  We had travel insurance but didn't need to file.

Wow...guess I missed out!  The only thing I got was RCI covering all my medical for setting the broken foot, gave me some crutches to use and keep and let me borrow a wheel chair.  😮   And they admitted it was their fault I tripped on the bad carpet to tile spot that had been giving way on a bad floor for some time now.

We received our insurance checks yesterday in the mail.  So, overall, it was just over one month from filing to receipt of checks.

I'm sorry to hear about your injury, glad your insurance company paid you. I don't want to hijack your thread, but, here are our insurance stories. We are from Canada and we were going to board a ship in Halifax that was coming from Quebec and heading to Florida. When we got to the port the ship wasn't there, because it wasn't able to dock in Halifax because of hurricane winds, so we had to fly to Boston to board the ship, guess what, our insurance did not cover our flights because according to them our vacation hadn't technically started yet because we had not boarded the ship. We live an hour from the port, so, as far as I am concerned, the vacation had started.

So, we found a new insurance company, and have been buying that insurance for several years. Along comes Hurricane Dorian, we fly from Halifax to Orlando, with the intent of 2 cruises, a 4 nightery, and a 3 nightery.  When we left home, our cruise was postponed 1 day, not a problem , we can find something to do for one day. Next thing you know the cruise is cancelled, again, no problem, we have insurance. I called the insurance company from our hotel room, the agent looks into it, and tells me we have coverage for our cruise being cancelled, tells me everything |I need to do, and emails me the paperwork that would need to be filled out and mailed to them. Again, no problem, we send everything that was required to the insurance company, which was approximately $1800 US. We received a letter 2 days ago from the insurance company....DENIED!!!

The insurance company denied the claim because when we purchased the insurance, there was talk of Hurricane Dorian in the news, but the exact path was not known, so therefore, we still chose to fly to Orlando knowing full well that the Hurricane could interrupt our cruise 😞

We are allowed to appeal their decision, but they will only allow this one time and it probably won't change their decision is what they have told me when I called them.

So, in our situation, 2 different insurance companies, 2 different times we were denied.

Again, sorry to hijack your thread, just had to rant! Thanks for reading 🙂

He couldn't and wouldn't leave me alone with my injury.  I need help getting in and out of the shower and with meals.  It would be different if one of us couldn't travel because of work, but for injury or illness, neither of us would go without the other.

My husband would never have left me alone to go on a cruise, nor would I have ever left him if he weren't able to cruise.  We were a partnership.  I can't imagine the relationship of a couple who would leave one at home when the one left is ill or unable to go for medical reasons.  That, to me, is sooooo sad.

Having said that, I guess we all have to do what we feel is right.  We started buying insurance because we had elderly parents and were concerned if we had to fly home etc.  We continued doing so as we got older and had to use it a few times.

I still get insurance for every cruise and have my family do the same.  To me, it's part of the price of the cruise.

Last time I looked insurance companies pay employees and still make money.  Should not be confused with the Red Cross.

We bought our insurance at booking through Royal.  If you had booked your air through the cruise line, you would have been covered.  Was it Royal Caribbean?  There are limitations to insurance and it's stated in their documentation.  And, if the cruise was cancelled, you should have been reimbursed for the cruise itself by the cruise line.  Did that happen?  If it did, you can't claim something  you were already being reimbursed for.

Sorry, we did get our taxes and fees reimbursed from Royal Caribbean for the first cruise because it was cancelled, I should have mentioned that. The cruise was a casino comp so that's all we paid were the taxes and fees. We are still out of pocket for the 5 extra nights in the hotel, the car rental, the extra meals for 5 days, plus, we needed to fly to Orlando to go on our second cruise, if we didn't fly when we did, we would have  missed our second cruise and we would not have received any money back on that cruise. We aren't trying to claim something we aren't entitled to, the cruise that was refunded wasn't even included in the insurance claim.

Unfortunately, being from Canada we have been told on multiple occasions, by Royal,  that we can't purchase Royal's insurance.

Have filed insurance claims twice with Royal.  Once for death in family and once for illness.  Absolutely no problems getting refund.  Whats more important when traveling is medical evacuation.  Very expensive to get last minute air.  Insurance also covers traveling companion.  I have no sympathy for anyone not  using travel insurance.  Unless you self insure and can afford to.

Your post wasn't clear.  You made it sound like you didn't get anything back on the second cruise when in reality, it was costs incurred staying in Orlando which I would have seen as a vacation.    I'm also confused as you're now saying the first cruise was cancelled, when in your original post, you said you flew to Boston to board since it couldn't dock in Halifax.   Reagardless,  your experience has nothing to do with RCI and their insurance.

The entire point of my post is that I used RCI's insurance and it worked.  I am just reporting my experience.  There's always going to be someone who doesn't get the outcome they want, but my post was about our good experience with RCI's insurance for anyone thinking about buying it.

I guess I am jealous that we can't book Royal's insurance, as you could tell by my posts, we haven't had much luck with the 2 insurance companies we have used.

For clarification, I used the wrong terminology "1st cruise" in my explanation. The 1st cruise we did fly to Boston and that cruise was still a go, and no insurance paid out to us for our Boston flights.

The cruise that was cancelled was the 1st cruise of a B2B, cruising out of Orlando, one cruise was a 4 nighter, next cruise was a 3 nighter, on the same ship.

Again sorry for the confusion, I just should not have said anything, sorry.

Well, that was passive aggressive.  Nobody has made you read this thread and I was trying to clear up a few things with that poster, but "regardless".

Sorry I'm so horrible for reporting what our experience was.  Actually, no I'm not.  No good deed...  Carry on.

My 13 year old son fractured his ankle in Aruba on out Oasis Christmas cruise last year.  He was seen by the ships doctor and an orthopedic surgeon in St. Kitts. Everything was submitted to our US insurance company and it was denied. The deductible for out of the country claims was outrageous. So we submitted the claim to our cruise insurance carrier (Roam Right) and after haggling over what paperwork they wanted, we were paid the entire claim less a $50 deductible. Very pleased and glad we had insurance for the trip.

Most travel insurance is secondary coverage.  Claim must first be rejected by your primary carrier.  This can be frustrating.  Came down with flu in the Caribbean and spent six months begging my blue cross carrier to reject claim.  Had to file three times before they finally turned it down.  Was then able to file with travel insurer who paid off one week.

Lesson is, don't by holiday insurance in Canada. 😄

Similar.

We had RCi purchased insurance on a cruise with my parents.  My mother had an issue was removed from the ship in Halifax.  Into the hospital and eventually med evaced to home.

The insurance company was very responsive and even negotiated with the hospital and med evac company to limit the charges to the amount of the coverage.

Also, they paid quickly on claims for the trip interruption and hotel and other costs.

VERY happy with the service.

I had no such problem with my insurance company. They were more than willing to tell me that my claim ($600) did not meet the out of country deductible ($2,500).  We were able to move on to the trip insurance rather quickly.  Even got paid for the transportation to/from the ship to the orthopedic surgeon in St. Kitts.
