NSW and QLD Fires

Catastronic fire danger forecast for Sydney and surrounding areas today. 

In addition, bad fires in Queensland, SA and WA.

Smoke from the bushfires has reached the South Pacific islands, as well as NZ.

Hopefully there are no new fires today and the conditions are not as bad as expected.

Probably the safest place to be particularly if Mrs GUT's workplace is in a fire prone area or she has to travel through one.

We back on to a small bush valley in Lane Cove so have some concerns today. We have a go bag packed and documents secured, just in case. In about another hour or so the cat will start to get stroppy because we won't let him out!

WOW Your concern was warranted as Lane Cove is close to the two Tullamurra bushfires.  Fortunately they were put out quickly, with assistance of a big plane dropping fire retardant.  Hope there are no more fires in Sydney bush.

Unfortunately the 70 rural and regional NSW fires are still in danger.

The Turramurra fires were 8km from us but still a concern as there is bush around the Lane Cove River which links through to where we are. Our real danger is some firebug starting something in our valley - which has happened twice since we've lived there - and if a strong wind is blowing the wrong way we'd have little or no warning.

Good news with all but one fire downgraded (for now) from emergency to watch and act. Just note that there are still 83 fires burning, 50 uncontained and only 1 at emergency.

I've just read a report in the Guardian about the Turramurra fires. There is suspicion that they were deliberately lit. 😡

I heard they caught numerous individuals lighting fires (not necessarily bush fires), some claimed they didn't know it was a total fire ban.

I suspect a few fires have been started by idiots tossing cigarette butts out their car windows.

Quite possibly although that was not mentioned, more people lighting a fire for camping/bbq when there is a total fire ban.

Bad fires down here on Far South Coast of New South Wales, Princes Hwy is closed to all traffic north and south, between Batemans Bay and Ulladulla.  Evacuation Centres set up at Ulladulla and Batemans bay for those affected.   Coastal communities like Bawley Point etc are cut off.   

 

The smoke around here has been a shocker around here for the past week.  A lot of water bombing and fire retardant carrying aircraft operating above us.

 

Not a day to be wanting to drive to/from Sydney, you would have a 3 hour detour via Canberra or Goulburn.

We were away for the weekend and didn't hear how bad the fires were in your area Les until this morning. Stay safe and hopefully the fires can be brought under control soon.

Pleased to see you are south of Batemans Bay, out of the current fire zone.  I hope firefighters can get on top of the fire, as that is such a beautiful Coastal Region.  Try to keep out of the smoke.
