Pier Runners on a River Cruise

On ocean cruising, you hear about passengers missing the ship, or the infamous pier runners videos on Youtube.

 

But has anyone missed their river cruise boat?

 

With the Christmas Markets, just around the corner, a couple of good glühweins (white) could be like having a good time at Senor Frogs in Mexico.

 

I would not recommend doing a pier runner in Passau - what with all those cobbled stones

With a bit more chaos happening I could have turned into a pier runner - in Passau!

For my cruise in 2013 I took a train, with the advice by the travel agent to choose an early one as "you never know what might happen". So we had a nice buffer of a few hours, but things went a bit wrong as when we got closer and closer to Würzburg our train was getting ever more delayed and we were in danger of missing our connection to Passau. We were fretting and my travel companion make the comment "never again with Deutsche Bahn, only in a private car". In the end it worked out okay with making the connection and arriving almost on schedule in Passau. In Bratislava we had one couple arriving back from an excursion five minutes before cast-off. They were walking quite fast...

We traveled with Scenic, Budapest to Nuremberg, but I wanted to see Burchtesgaden more than Salzburg so arranged a Tours By Locals in advance. tour company contacted Scenic prior to cruise and was given wrong drop off point for us to begin our tour hence over an hour late. We completed our tour but a few traffic accidents had us very worried about reconnecting to ship. We skidded to a stop in Passau as they were lifting the gang plank. some cruisers were not exactly happy with the small delay we caused but most wanted to see the pictures of Berchtesgaden and the Eagles Nest

On our first Seine River cruise, we "lost" a passenger in Les Andelys, and after searching for her for 45 minutes, left. The cruise director was distraught, but had told the local shop keepers to be on the lookout. Sure enough, about 30 minutes after our departure, the CD got a call from a shopkeeper, who was going to drive the lady to the next lock, to meet the ship. The passenger was older, and, shall we say "well rounded" and it was quite a sight, watching the staff try to "hoist" her onto the ship, while it was approaching/moving through the lock.

The event did result in the creation of a mixed drink on board, which was given the name of her cabin #.

That turned into its own story, as the bartender made a few pitchers in advance, one of which was mistakenly served as the "welcome back" punch as we arrived back from an excursion.

The erroneous serving happened on the last full day of the cruise, in Paris. We had gone off on our own, so missed the shenanigans. The bartender told us about it later. We were all in tears.

That bartender has now moved on to the Viking Sea, and works in the Explorer's Lounge. Our bartender on the Star this past spring is good friends with him, and sent him a pic of the 3 of us, and reminded him of the story.

We all had a good laugh:-)

We lost a passenger in Munich (excursion from Passau). The woman asked where the closest restroom was and then was going to meet us at the bus but the bus moved and then she tried to find the bus at the new location. Thankfully she and her husband both turned their cell on and called each other and it all worked out. Both had kept their phones in airplane mode previously so glad they had the same thought. 

 

We were 2 hours from port so glad the woman made the bus.
