Ocean Medallion Questions - Part 2

RocketMan275;  iphones and ipads have facial recognition; they use the chip in the phone.  Princess could have an ipad mini or iphone plus by each door and use the chip in the phone for facial recognition;  the only issue I see would be; every seven days you have to reset all the devices for the new passenger load.  However; I am sure apple engineers could figure that out with no problem.

Using the slot machines in the casino requires a tap of the medallion PLUS entering a 4 digit pin.  I don't understand why it would be so difficult to require entry of a pin to use the medallion on one of the big boards.  Has anyone reading this thread used a big board to play Ocean Casino?  If so, did you need to enter a pin before wagering on a big board?  An additional layer of security when using public access boards wouldn't hurt at all.

I don't think incorporating facial recognition into every cabin door would be as super easy as you think.  The processing would have to be in a central computer and would require some very big pipelines to move the data to the computer.  It would be very expensive to put that processing power in each cabin.

BTW, facial recognition is rather controversial with claims that it discriminates against various groups.

Discriminates? Who came up with that stupid nonsense? Had it to board some ships it was accurate and fast.

When we arrived in London I had to scan my passport to continue. I had my glasses on so I could read the directions telling me what to do. The facial recognition failed several times and I was denied. An attendant asked me to step back, remove my glasses, and try again. It worked then. The technology definitely has issues.

Some one did a test where the false identification was higher for minorities, hence the discrimination.

Google Facial Identification Minorities.

It was all the hooha in the usual places.

And, how much would it cost to put an IPAD at each cabin door?

And, how it might sound easy to you but the apple engineers might have a different opinion.

This is really a nothing burger.

Pretty obvious that one can charge without surrendering the medallion.  After all, they can be worn on a watch band.  Would it be expected to take your watch off to buy a drink?

I answered that question above. I haven't seen anyone hand over the medallion on the Medallion cruises that we have done.

So... if a waiter is cruising around and I order a drink how is payment handled? Do they have tablets that can take payment?

I gather so. In the dining room, when we ordered wine by the glass they just asked for cabin numbers and they had a tablet with them, and I assume on deck is the same. I always get up and go to the bars out on the decks but I'm sure the waiters out there had tablets. In the dining room, where they used to take your cruise cards, they certainly do not take your medallions.

Thanks. It makes sense. If they have a tablet and can "see" your medallion then confirming your cabin number should suffice to authenticate the purchase.

Just off the Sky and it really varied how payment was made. Some bars, the servers had a little machine thing that you put your medallion on. Some bars they ALWAYS asked for your cabin number even if you were sitting at the bar right next to the medallion reader. It always seemed to work out and we had no incorrect charges---though sometimes my DH and I had our drinks mixed ---mine was on his and his on mine. We had the drink package so none of that mattered to us anyway.

On Regal in February, the bars only had one medallion reader.  With 3 or 4 bartenders manning the bar and customers lined up in double rows, most PAX being served couldn't even get close to the reader necessitating handing your medallion to the bartender for him to tap the medallion reader.

The waiters wandering Lido did not have medallion readers and were still asking for your cabin number and handwriting it on a chit.  I don't think they have enough portable medallion readers for each waiter or waitress.

That's interesting then. So are you saying that if you had your medallion in the watch band you either had to take it out or hand over your watch band. If so, that's hopeless and I hope that fix that up.

Hmmm... Went ahead and downloaded the app. Installed it and put in my booking number. I was extremely surprised that it recognized a cruise that doesn't sail until May of 2021 but it did and filled in the cruise info. Then I tried to do the profile setup. I put in my email and it asked for a password. Tried my regular Princess password and it said incorrect. Tried my old Princess password and it doesn't even say incorrect but, instead, just sits there doing nothing at all and still showing the same page. It doesn't even clear out the password field - it just does nothing.

I can't imagine I'm the first one with this problem but a quick perusal and search off this topic didn't help. What's the deal?

Edit: Tried again. Now the password field is completely unresponsive. I can't even enter text.

I"m having trouble with the medallion app as well. This is my first Princess Cruise. I downloaded the app and can log in with my booking number, but I can't update my profile at all. The app wants me to sign in with my email and password. I tried my ocean.com and princess.com accounts and nothing works. My husband's app won't even allow him to access his app with the booking number. Our travel companions have been able to log in without any issues using their princess.com information. Any ideas?

Are you absolutely certain you know your ocean.com login info?  If you are then see if there is a function there to change your password and try again with the new password. I made mine the same as my Princess login to avoid the hassle of remembering yet another stupid password. Good luck. You can always try the phone number for support. (There is supposed to be a dedicated support number - I know I've seen it posted but am too lazy to search for it.)

I actually uninstalled the app as my first medallion cruise isn't until May of 2021 and I was getting notices about it being a battery hog in the background. No sense in my having it at the moment. I'll put it back later when it's needed. There may well be a new version of it by that time anyway.

We're having the same exact problems. I've given up.

I'll hand the phone to the internet manager on the ship & see if they can fix it.

I can certainly live without it.

I have a question about the app. Mine keeps telling me the booking number has already been claimed. I removed then reinstalled the app, went through the process with a Princess rep, and it accepted my booking. When I went to enter my documents it asked for the booking number again, and once again told me that number was already claimed. I'm in a loop and cannot enter info.

Any ideas?

Punt, or line up in the wishbone formation and do a quick kick

pick up OM at port, or wait a week or so , if you have time , and try again

I had the same problem with my booking number already claimed. I called Princess and the rep had to submit a ticket to IT to get it fixed. They had me change my password and  were able to resolve the problem. I’m guessing it’s a known issue because it didn’t take them long to fix it for me.

The whole "change your password" thing is a total crock. Most folks already have far too many passwords to deal with. Forcing them to change yet another password to some stupid new thing is wrong. Fix the dang IT issues and stop forcing your customers to be beta testers.

Just a scary observation.  We are sailing on the Regal cruise in 2 weeks.  I just received a tracking from fed-ex.  The medallions  started their journey in Singapore are now in Japan.  I should receive them in PA tomorrow. I guess I can wash them in soap and water(or something stronger) since they can get wet. Has anyone else notice this?
