Semi-Live EDGE Review with bonus Accessibility Comments! Nov 15 2019 sailing

Quick intro: Boarded yesterday and had a shocking development on the way onto the ship. Long story short - I tripped over my own suitcase during boarding and fractured my right foot! My very first experience onboard was the Medical Bay, which they had to open early to see me. The doctor took several x-rays and sure enough, I fractured it. I’m now enjoying Edge from the perspective of a wheelchair user (they assigned one to me).

So this review will have an added unexpected  “bonus” of lots of accessibility comments, straight from an injured fluffy cruiser staying in a normal IV Concierge room, in a wheelchair.

Typing this from my phone but will share more later. Stay tuned!

P.S. We did ask if there was any way to get moved to an accessible cabin, but the cruise is totally sold out. So our IV will have to do, unfortunately.

So sorry!

I did two Eclipse cruises with mobility issues not easy! It isn’t until you have a problem you realise all the things you take for granted become a battle.

At least you dont don’t need to go over a ‘lip’ to enjoy your balcony being in an IV room...

Sincere best wishes that the discomfort is minimal and that you still manage to enjoy your cruise...Pain could be a good excuse for an extra cognac or two...

Was the ship’s doctor happy for you to stay on board for the cruise? Has he been able to provide you with what support strapping/orthopaedic boot you need? I have always thought they would expect you to go to a hospital for anything more serious than a sprain...

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

So sorry, Deb. As you may know, I started one of my Edge cruises by tripping on a raised floor outlet on the gangway and doing a face plant on the opposite wall of windows. It was a horrible (and embarrassing) way to start my cruise with blood, stitches and steri-strips, but so thankful that Medical was wonderful. They took good care of me. Not sure if Dr Levy and Miguel are still there, but they are excellent.

I love your attitude, saying that this is a bonus for us to hear about the accessible life on the Edge - spoken like a true Cruise Critic aficionado! Take it easy and let yourself be pampered. I hope you will still have a great cruise, albeit from a different angle. Will keep you in my thoughts for a speedy recovery! 💐

What a way to start your cruise but your good attitude will carry you through. I am booked on the Edge for next May and am looking forward to your comments on her.  Also, I am always interested to find out more about the medical care on board (but not first hand hopefully).

I hope your pain management is adequate and you can enjoy your cruise.

da - So sorry to hear this! vt had something similar happen to her, except she tripped along the gangway... with stitches and hat, no less.

Many of us will look forward to your experiences from this perspective, as well, your overall impression (+/-) of the ship...

We board upon your return!

Stay safe(r) and bon voyage

Sorry to hear of your "trip".  Glad to hear that they were able to treat you so quickly and at least make accommodations for you.

You have a wonderful attitude and am sure you will enjoy your vacation albeit from a different angle.

While aboard I did notice a number of accessible lifts and elevators that should give you access to some of the more difficult locations.    The one in Eden appeared to be to the right of the main entrance.    I also saw one from the Track near the sunset bar.

This trip was not the way to start your cruise!  Attitude is 99%; yours is excellent. Hope you aren’t experiencing too much discomfort. If you get swelling, one thing that has helped me is lie on the floor & rest your legs on the wall. Hope you enjoy your cruise.

Looks like Grand Cayman port is cancelled. We got close to the island and the ship was really rocking. Luckily I was still laying in bed. Now we’re cruising away and all the excursions have dropped off the app. The captain surely announced it but we missed it. Will listen to his 9:45 daily update to hear what happened

Broken foot was excruciating yesterday but the 2nd and 3rd day are always rough. Two days until next port, not sure if they will arrange a doctor there or not. Seems a challenge to find an orthopedic specialist on these tiny Caribbean islands

Another cutback is the works. On Edge the Premium Plus included minibar Kind bars are being replaced with some much lower quality granola & fruit bars. Bleah. Definitely don’t like this change.

Kind bar from the Silhouette minibar last week (top) compared to the Edge granola bar (bottom). This is what was restocked last night and our cabin steward said this is what they have now.

Cheap puffy rice granola bars don’t say “modern luxury” to me.

So sorry that you are in pain. Hope this will be a better day for you. I hope they at least have the free movies for you.

Were they able to immobilize your foot with a boot or cast?  Do they have that sort of equipment on board?  They must have xrays- right?  Are they waiting for a land based orthopedist to set your foot?  Sending healing thoughts your way.....

I'm very sorry about your foot.  I always say that it wouldn't be a vacation if something didn't happen to my wife's feet/toes.  She usually trips, cuts it, gets massive blisters, etc.  Last year, she tried to save an overturned sting ray in Marco Island, FL and ended up slipping off the rock and cutting open the bottom of her foot.

Do you buy the medical insurance before you sail?  does it cover those types of injuries?

I’ve been staying on my phone so forgive the shorter updates. Once I pull out the laptop I’ll be more thorough.

Dr Lever in the medical bay made a temporary splint and prescribed more pain meds. She’s trying to get me an appointment in Curacao (day after tomorrow). After canceling Grand Cayman due to rough seas, Celebrity was able to arrange for us to have a longer port time in Curacao (8 am arrival instead of 3:30!). Hopefully the longer time ashore will allow us to get my foot examined by a specialist.

For now just hanging in Eden watching the wake, waiting for our dinner time.
