We were on a cruise when the announcement was made public about their tie up with Carnival and at one of the parties the Captain said that P&O had to look for a partner else they wouldnt be able to compete in the future with new builds. Ofcourse RCCL were the favourites to join forces with P&O but were trumped at the last minute by Carnival and it has always been rumoured that Carnival only did it because they wanted to get their hands on Princess.

I think that Princess were also the main prize that RCI were after as well, which is not surprising given their position in the US market.  However P&O on its own would never have been able to finance the new build programme that Carnival set up for Princess, P&O and Aida cruises, nor would the expansion of P&O Australia have been possible either.  So love them or loathe them Carnival have certainly expanded the European and Australasia cruise industry way beyond what would have been possible without them.

But I do still have that yearning for what might have been under RCI, maybe we would have been sailing in Solstice and Edge class ships now, who knows.
