Private tour would be one option. Rome in Limo is a great provider.

Another option would be taking the train in, and getting to the Colosseum by walking or cab, or possibly public transit.

Generally, there are not tours just standing by at the port. If there are, you sort of have to wonder why they aren't already employed by the vendors, as tours and guides require licenses.

The train station in Civitavecchia is about a 15-20 minute walk from the port and it's about an hour train ride into Rome.  We bought a BIRG ticket which covered the train to/from Rome and the Metro.  We reserved tickets for an underground tour of the Colosseum and we could use the same ticket to visit the Forum.

Total day cost us less than 100 Euros for the two of us and by not being in a group tour we could be on our own schedule.

A group tour will likely include other sites in addition to the Colosseom.  A private tour for just the two of you would be expensive but it would allow you to have control over the itinerary.

You might see if there is a Rome on your own tour that gets you round trip to Rome and then on your own. Once there, Rome is easy to get around on your own by walking or taxi. If you do a tour that includes the Colosseum and want to go inside make sure that is included. Most tours do not go inside the Colosseum due to the long lines for security.

So ya a private tour is more likely to cost more but I’ll look into it. I’m not wanting to do a private, more a group thing.

i don’t want to take the train and all that being the travel time and such in Rome.

Well, maybe you will shoot down this idea as well, but join your roll call and see what others have arranged. Maybe you can join an already arranged group. It probably won't just go to the Colosseum, tho.

if your only interest is to see the Colosseum, I would definitely take the train, specifically the new express train.

We took the express from Civi to S Pietro , 35 minutes.  We ended our day at the Colosseum where we grabbed a cab and were dropped off at the Ostiense station for the express ride back to Civi (50 minutes).

It's a bit of a pain to travel between the port and train station,  in that you take a free shuttle from the ship to the port entrance (Largo Della Pace) , then a city bus to the station.  But it was quite seemless.   And the train is so cheap, 15E  RT.

p.s. there was a long line at the Civi train station to buy tickets, but a little office next door was selling RT TICKETS ONLY.  We walked up to their counter and bought our tickets within seconds.

When we docked in Civitevecchia late September we had half hour wait for the shuttle that dropped us in the centre of Civitevecchia. It was very busy but there were a few taxis parked near the shuttle buses and these were taking people into the town. Several people shared a taxi rather than wait for the shuttle bus, you are not allowed to walk in the dock area. Once dropped at the bus park there were a few taxis offering lifts into Rome at 20 euros per person (I guess this would be 1 way in a shared taxi) or Rome tours
