Uber from Penn Station to the port

We will be taking NJ transit to Penn Station in Dec and wanted to know who has done Uber to the port?  About how much it cost? I'm thinking Uber instead of taxi because if we get traffic or wait at the port a taxis meter will keep running while Uber is a flat rate. We will only have two rolling suitcases and a backpack. Thank you

Manhattan, sorry

Somewhere in the range of $15 with UberX-- I think thats what it was the last time we did it.

One of the few times I would say that the taxis have a slight advantage over Uber/Lyft-- Penn Station can be a madhouse to find the Uber driver during busy times (and the fact that a bunch of the road in front of it on both sides is covered by taxi lines) that if you see a taxi or the line is short it might save you a little time vs waiting for the Uber to show up and will be about the same price.

Taxis are usually queued up at Penn and it should only be about $15 for the cab to get over to the Manhattan pier from there. From Penn to Manhattan pier, I'd do cab.

In situations where it can be challenging to find/get to your uber driver, there's something to be said for hopping in a waiting cab, even if it isn't the cheapest option.

The difference between Uber and taxi fare is unlikely to be significant, so at Penn Station it really makes sense to grab a yellow cab than try to connect with a Uber.  And, if for some unlikely reason there seem to be a shortage of taxis, your easy “Plan B” is to walk a block and then call a Uber in a less crowded spot -  it might cost you no more than a couple of minutes.

Flip side of that is you can use a true New Yorker hack and if the line for cabs is long, just walk to the next block behind the taxi line and there is usually a cab driver who is dropping off and will just let you in-- you both get to skip the line. It's not the nicest thing to do to those waiting in line but locals will do it frequently.

Not surprised you’d do this. It’s illegal for the medallion driver to do this and if caught he can get in trouble. Plus who wants to schlep their luggage thru the street just to beat a line.

To the OP, the taxi line on the eighth avenue side of Penn outside of Madison Square Garden usually has plenty of yellow cabs waiting. It’s easier than locating an Uber if you don’t know the area.

Lets not get our knickers in a bunch-- I didn't say it was the right thing to do but you would be in denial if you said that it doesn't happen very frequently. And it's not at all illegal to hail a cab a block or two ahead of a taxi stand for the passenger or the driver. I wasn't suggesting trying to get into a cab that was already in queue.

If there's a long line at Penn head over to the 8th Ave side as that line is usually less than 7th Ave or just hire an Uber.
