Car Rental - Papeete

Hello,

We're flying into Papeete but then leaving out on a ship.  We're staying quite a way out of town and will need to rent a car.  Does anyone know if there are specific car rental companies that have drop off in Papeete as opposed having to go all the way out to the airport and then taxi back in to catch our ship?

Thanks for any assistance,

Nancy

Here you go   ....

Avis and Hertz both have rental desk at the airport as well as downtown though Avis is closer to the heart of Papeete and the ship/ferry docks. However, both will shuttle you to the ship/ferry location when you drop off.

Nancy...how far out of town are you staying? Are you pretty sure that a taxi would be prohibitively expensive over a rental car?

We're in Puuanaia?  Not sure the spelling is right but it's an airbnb - all the previous reviews said a car was necessary. Do you think that is correct?

If they said a car was necessary then I guess you should probably go with that. But Punaauia is south of the airport and the port. Depending on how far south into the area you are, it's approximately 20 minutes from the port, 10 from airport. Sofitel Tahiti Ia Ora (formerly Le Meridien) is about smack in the center of Punaauia. Someone who has stayed at that recently renamed Le Meridien might be able to tell give you an idea of cab fare.

Alternatively, here's what I'd do. Go on Google maps and determine how far your Airbnb is from Sofitel Tahiti Ia Ora. (Google still has it labeled Le Meridien) . Then email Tahiti Ia Ora reservations@tahitiiaorabeachresort.com and ask if they can give you an idea of what cab fare would run.

We also stayed at an Airbnb in Puuanaia at the end of our cruise last year but the owner picked us at the port and dropped us off at the airport (Yes, a gem!) It probably would have cost us about $75 total if that helps. Punaauia is a lovely bedroom community of Papeete- you'll be pleased you chose it.

One last thing. You might want to try Yota Tahiti taxi and tours. I think their rates are about $35 to $40pp for the airport to the Sofitel Ia Ora Tahiti, but I could have that wrong, Be interested to see if you get a response..

We are renting a car before our cruise. We chose Avis by the port. Hertz prices seem a lot cheaper. They do not include unlimited mileage. They charge for mileage.

We wanted a car to explore the island.

Hertz does have some with unlimited miles  ....

I've rented from both Avis and Hertz, both are decent but as we only drive less than 20 km it's a better price to rent a car from Hertz and pay for the mileage. If I was driving around the island I would rent with unlimited as you did.

the drop off at the cruise pier, is that just from downtown or airport?
