Cannes: Choice of 3 tours

We are sailing on the Epic in Sept. I think we have figured out most of our tours, but are not decided on Cannes where we will be in port. We have narrowed our  choice down to 2 eight hour tours to 1.  Monaco and Monte Carlo or,  2. Monaco & Nice. Our other option would be a six hour Hop on Hop off bus in Monaco, from which they say you can take a train to Monte Carlo. Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences with these tours?

This is our first time to this area.

Thanks for any input.

The country of Monaco is tiny.  It is essentially one town.  One half is the old town, the other half is Monte Carlo, divided by the port area which is called La Condamine.  All densely populated from one end to the other.  You do not take a train from Old town Monaco to Monte Carlo.  You take a bus or taxi, or you walk.  But you can take a train from Cannes to Monaco.  Look at this map:

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Casino+de+Monte-Carlo,+Place+du+Casino,+Monaco/Prince's+Palace+of+Monaco,+98015+Monaco/@43.7357139,7.4181516,16z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x12cdc287e46e0265:0xa66ee70c598cf4e3!2m2!1d7.4280681!2d43.7390972!1m5!1m1!1s0x12cdc29276abcc2b:0x4ff95fffc2fbc021!2m2!1d7.4198627!2d43.7314751!3e2?hl=en

The train station (Gare de Monaco) is in the center.  I am showing the 21 minute (1 mile) walking route between the Prince's Palace in the Old Town to the Casino in Monte Carlo.

In my opinion, a full day tour to Monaco and Monte Carlo is excessive.  The tour to Monaco and Nice is a much better option, especially if it makes a stop at Eze.

By the way, Cannes is 35 miles from Monaco, well over 1 hour by car.  Nice is between them.  Eze is between Nice and Monaco:

Maybe you are referring to the little tourist train in Monaco.  If you go DIY this could be an alternative to the ho-ho bus.

  • 3 weeks later...

We have done this itinerary a few times.  To be honest after the three big days out, Cannes comes as a bit of a rest.  It is also a lovely place to visit.

We have

1.  Explored Cannes

2. Caught the bus (can also do train) to Antibes in the morning and explored Cannes in the afternoon

3. Got on the boat to Ile St Marguerite and had a good walk around.  We could have gone back into Cannes but a beer in O’Sheehans was calling.

You have to decide what you want from the port.

What activities/sites would you recommend in Cannes?

As you walk from the ship, turn left up to the area marked on Google maps as Le Suquet.  That is worth a little wander.  Walk back down to the old port and admire the boats.  The wander around the Film festival building, checking out your favourite actors.

If it is hot, you can swim free of charge from the public beach here.   If you want to go more upmarket you can pay in may of the beach clubs along la Croisette.  This road is worth a stroll anyway.  You can admire the cars and the iconic Carlton hotel.

It might be time to look at the shops.  Cannes may be expensive but I have done my best shopping here in the chain stores.  It is also well worth going to Paul Bakery for your favourite French pastry.  I recommend the Tarte Citron.  It is a lovely chance to practise your school days French.  Even just to say ‘Bonjour’ which the French expect.

Now if your ship docks for a reasonable time, there would have been time to take a trip out to Ile Sainte Marguerite, or to have taken a short train ride (station is sort of just east of le Suquet) to Antibes, and if you leave reasonably early there will still be time to explore Cannes.

As I have said multiple times before, Cannes is one of my favourite ports.
