This does not sound good re the White Island volcanic eruption :classic_ohmy:

"Many of the people visiting White Island today were from the cruise ship Ovation of the Seas which is berthed at the Port of Tauranga this morning. Port company chief executive Mark Cairns says he understands the majority of those injured in the eruption are from the ship, the largest cruise vessel that visits Tauranga."

Ovation of the Seas is berthed in Tauranga today . At 2.15 this afternoon the active volcanic Island , White Island , erupted . It is feared that passengers from the ship may have been visiting the Island at the time . News is still coming through, but 50 people were known to be there and some are missing .

TV news update just said 4 people sent to burns unit, search and rescue is on the island and have downsized those on the island to 50 (did report 100 earlier).  At least 20 people have gone to hospital but they only reported 1 in a serious condition. Those who did the helicopter excursion were fine and have returned to shore via boat but still a number unaccounted for.

Wow. That was quite an eruption. I didn't realize that there might be cruise passengers on the island. That is very sad news. Thanks for posting the article, it had a lot more information and video than I had seen previously.

The Police have now advised that one person has been killed and there is likely to be further fatalities. Apparently there are people still on the Island unaccounted for. According to Port of Tauranga there were 28 passengers on an official ships tour from Ovation of the Seas. It’s not known whether any are injured at this point but the ship is remaining in Port overnight.

Prayers for those on board that they soon have some news of their families and loved ones, and prayers for those at home who are hearing of this terrible news through media outlets. After all the bushfires, and now it seems that most of those missing are Australians, it just seems that the country is crying. So, so sad.

One crew member involved as well. I'm following a facebook page that is getting updates by a passenger on the ship whose name is Sylvain Plasse from Montreal. Apparently a couple of ambulances have also now pulled up at the ship as well and according to other passengers currently on the ship the mood is very grim.

Like Queen P said, we just had a report on A Current Affair here saying 5 were deceased and many more with burns. There are still many unaccounted for and it is too dangerous to access the island at the moment or to even fly over it.

Does the ship have to stay in port, longer than just an overnight stay?

I don’t think anyone will know until the morning. It will be dark now.

It will be a decision of the company and the captain.

My guess: they'll cancel Wellington & Dunedin, probably stay where they are for a couple of days and come back to Sydney, perhaps via the sounds if time permits. They're due back on the 16th.

It is believed there are no survivors on the island according to Police. One person identified as having passed away is a local Tour Guide who knew the island well. I think it’s looking grim for up to 27 people deemed to have been there at the time.
