Taking Passports off Ship?

I think I may have read that Costa requires you to bring your passport with you when going ashore. Can any recent cruisers confirm this?

We will be on board the Med in Feb. I am concerned about bringing passports to the beach/snorkeling etc. Did anyone find this to be an issue?

Americans in the caribbean DO NOT need to take their passports off the ship. They do need to bring a photo ID like a drivers license along with their ship card.
