Renting car...how is traffic in Aruba?

If we rent a car for the day, would we spend a lot of time sitting in traffic while exploring the island?  Trying to decide between doing this or a day at the beach.  (Barcelo or Reflexions)

Thanks for any suggestions!

Aruba is a small island with a ton of cars. Traffic often backs up in several areas. It was so bad last year that our taxi couldn't make it back to our resort. He kept turning inland, trying new routes. We finally gave up and got out and walked. However,  they just completed a new highway that runs from the airport to the resort area. It is supposed to reduce the amount of traffic in the downtown area. We'll be there at the end of January and see first hand if it makes a difference.
