Did they fix Nieuw Amsterdam's azipod or is she sailing with one operational?

pretty incredible watching all this USGC evac unfold.

Calling on a port that was(and still is)under a state of emergency, was extremely insensitive ...you could tell the people of PR were not happy. The only power, were with generators. Almost nothing open. Everything dark.
No prior notice of missing St Marteen port due to Azipod failure. One azipod would not get us there in time.

All aboard in St Croix was 1:30, so had maybe 2 hours at a beach before we had to head back. Lame.

Unable to get to HMC because of dangerous tender conditions, not their fault, but sucked nonetheless.

Happy to be home.

Without delay, I replied, "For the love of god, lock the dead-horse-beating, 19-page-long azipod discussion on Cruise Critic."

It had to be asked. Like I said before, it really seems like they are making this stuff up as they go. It started out with a very stern, "You only get what was stated in your email and nothing more!", to a much gentler tone.

I suspect most of the calls they're getting are from very angry customers, so they're probably trying to cut off arguments and demands for more. I wouldn't want that job this week!

But asking for the year to be a booking window instead of actually taking the cruise is a reasonable request. It should have been the offer to begin with, so  I'm glad they gave it to you.

For those currently sailing on Nieuw Amsterdam (Jan. 11 departure) and who wish to share their experiences …. it would be interesting to hear about:

   1. Any delays related to sailing with one functional azipod unit (only the port unit operational)

   2. Any unusual vibrations or other shipboard sensations associated with this abnormal operating condition

   3. Any additional information associated with the Feb. 1 repair/replacement plan at the Freeport shipyard

   4. Any insight given to guests at the "Ask the Captain" event later in the week.

Door #3 it is, with the additional concession that the 100% FCC cruise must be BOOKED within 365 days of the transfer, which makes it an even better option. Now it's on to filing the paperwork with HAL for non-refundable hotel and airline costs.

Wouldn’t your trip insurance cover this?

Just to share that mom and I returned home this past Sunday after being on the Nieuw Statendam for 14 days (Christmas & New Years back to back 7 day cruises) and that we also had weather problems. We sailed on Dec. 22nd on time based on the time we were given by our captain and there were 8 ships in that day. There was also a front that was moving across the Gulf of Mexico and then also across FL. These fronts regularly continue east towards the Bahamas. on the 22nd it was pretty windy in Ft. Lauderdale and we lucked out with not getting the heavy rain that had showed up on a weather app I use. I knew that there was a possibility that this was going to effect our weather on our 1st day out when we were supposed to be at Half Moon Cay. Despite our on time departure from Port Everglades, we were a hour & 15 minutes late arriving to HMC and as soon as we had sailed out of Port Everglades our captain did make a announcement warning everyone of the conditions we could have. Especially crossing the Straits of Florida. As we arrived at HMC and saw the conditions, especially the way the waves were crashing in closer to the western point of the island I knew that we wouldn't be staying. The big tenders came out to us and one did on at least 2 occasions try to come along side  to see if they could position the ship so that a safe operation to go ashore. But the tender was moving around way too much and there were a lot of people out on their verandahs on our side watching this. Within 35 minutes our stop was canceled. For us it turned into a extra sea day for a total of 2 to Oranjestad, Aruba and with a earlier arrival we had more time there on Christmas  day. The one thing I noticed was that no one was complaining and everyone was taking it in stride. After Aruba we went over to Willemstad, Curacao and then was 2 days at sea back to Ft. Lauderdale. So for a 7 day cruise we only had 2 ports and 4 sea days.

When we went back out for our 2nd week for New Years we did make it in to HMC our last day last Saturday. We were there with the Zuiderdam for the 2nd time as we were also together on New Years Eve at Amber Cove and had one very impressive war of ships whistles. Getting back to last Saturday when hearing the announcement with our weather forecast for heading back into Port Everglades last Sunday morning told me that we were going to be dealing with another front. We had the effects of it during the night when the winds  really, really blew as we were also head on into it. When it woke me up and my mom too I pulled the curtain back a little to look out on to our verandah (deck 8 mid ship) the spray blowing along the side of the ship was like a white out. Didn't last all night but for maybe a couple of hours and enough to want to look out to see what was going on. Despite leaving HMC almost a hour late we were back into Port Everglades with 7 other ships Sunday morning. Know the other ships probably dealt with the same conditions and also could have contributed to the delay in disembarkation starting. The proof of being head on through the front over night was the 55 degree weather and I remember reminding someone because of what they said that Florida has a winter too. It can and does freeze too.

We left 12/22 on the Pacific Princess and were  returning to FLL the same day as you guys and definitely experienced the rocking, rolling seas in the night! Walking to the bathroom, I nearly fell onto the bed and then almost fell into the wall on the other side right after! That was after earning my sea legs after being on the small ship 14 days already! In fact, the first 2 nights at home, I felt like I was still on the ship rocking and rolling.

Apologies if this has been mentioned but Jan 17-Feb 1 the NA is booked for a pair of StarVista charter cruises. Jan 17-24 is the Soul Train Cruise and Jan 24-Feb 1 is the Country Music Cruise. Both are sold out, and both feature nightly concerts by major touring artists who have been contracted for over a year, so it's little surprise that the NA is waiting until after these charters until it goes into drydock.

Jan 17-25 ports of St Maarten, St. Croix and HMC are remaining but with less time at each port. Cruisers are getting a $100 OBC.

Jan 25-Feb 1 ports of call were originally going to be St Maarten, San Juan and HMC but are now slated to be St. Thomas, SJ and HMC. Cruisers are getting $75 OBC.

As these cruisers have music going all day and night at multiple stages very few cruisers care about ports and many don't even bother getting off the ship.

It's interesting this thread went for 20 pages, and noone has discussed the issues the Nieuw Statendam had last week with the azipod.  She is scheduled for her Transatlantic Crossing this Saturday.  Does anyone have any detailed information on her current status and how it may affect our crossing?

This thread is about the N. Amsterdam, and was active 3 years ago.  Not the N Statendam,  which wasn't even launched when the N. Amsterdam had this problem. There is absolutely no relationship,  that I can see.

In addition to what CruiserBruce said, I see nothing when searching about an azipod issue with NS. Are you sure that you're not confusing the ships? It would be a major story if the new class of ships had azipod issues.

@MisterBill99, best to tag @Native Floridian 26 to get their attention to answer the questions.

I replied to their post, that should have been enough to get them notified. But thanks.

Yep, you are correct.

There was a couple of posts elsewhere about an azipod problem on N. Statendam in around December, I think. As they can climb into the azipod, maybe the problem was fixed with in a few days.

Notifications can be turned off. I've turned mine off to replies, but do get them when tagged.

Please, don't anyone ask me how to turn notifications off! I did it so long ago, and just that once, and can't remember.

Well, then I guess you won't get notified about this reply. I'm not going out of my way to tag someone in my reply, when simply replying to their post should suffice.

Sorry, I'm on the NS Transatlantic now and haven't had internet until I got to the ports. There was an azipod issue causing itinerary changes 2 weeks before the crossing on April 8th. One was not working.  Initial fixes failed, but an azipod specialist was on the cruise the week before the crossing trying to get it fixed. It must have been fixed because we've made it without issues. Many of us were worried about the issue prior to the crossing and while researching azipod issues, I found this thread. I was very surprised noone was talking about the NS issues. The Facebook group for the cruise two weeks prior to the crossing talked about it
