Question about a return flight from Dublin

Recommended Posts

We are flying home from Dublin and have a few questions.  Delta just changed our layover in Boston and now it will be 5 hours.  There is another flight with a layover that is an hour and 45 minutes.  Would that be enough time if we could switch?  I am asking because I am not sure about the pre-clearance in Dublin.  Is that for US citizens returning to the United States? Thanks

Pre clearance in Dublin is for all travellers, not just US citizens, and it's brilliant. You are pre clearing Customs and Immigration so you avoid the queue for these when you arrive in the US.

A couple of years ago we booked a flight from Dublin to San Francisco with a layover of about 4 hours in Chicago. There was an option of an earlier flight from Chicago to SF but we gave ourselves the 4 hour option to allow for a delay from Dublin. We arrived on time in Chicago and walked straight off the plane to the check in desk for the SF flight and were able to get on the earlier flight.

As JimmyTheSaint says: Preclearance is for all passengers.  You arrive in US airport as a domestic flight.  You will have cleared US Immigration and Customs in Dublin, so you just go directly to your next flight.  The one downside of Pre clearance is that the airlines are not supposed to sell duty free liqour onboard as technically you are not on an international flight but a domestic flight.

I wouldn't think twice about booking that flight with an hour and 45 minutes in Boston.  Even if your flight is an hour late arriving, you'll still have more than enough time to get on the connection.
