Celebrity Eclipse will miss one port this week (Punta Arenas)

We are on the 05 Jan 2020 cruise on Eclipse out of San Antonio.  Our captain is being cautious and cancelled our port in Punta Arenas due to a Pacific storm with very high winds generating 30 ft seas!  We will be riding it out in the more protected Chilean Fjords until the storm passes.  We are disappointed to miss the penguin tours planned but safety is priority one!

Sorry that you had to miss that port . We did come close to missing it last year and we needed a tug to keep us pinned to the pier because of the wind . The trip to the penguin island was pretty bumpy in the small boats as well . We hope that the rest of the trip goes well .

Sorry you are missing a port.

We are sailing BA-Santiago in February and are well aware of frequent issues with the Falklands.

How common are storms causing other ports to be missed?

The cruise around Cape Horn/Strait of Magellan even in summer (now) is always at risk for adverse weather, high winds and seas.  We knew that going in.  Hopefully we will miss only 1 port.  There are a lot of tender ports so it is even more difficult.

If the weather is really bad you may cut through instead of going around . If you're going to Punta Tombo for penguins it's better for penguins and other wildlife than Punta Arenas was last year .

Now we are missing our second port (Punta Del Este) and proceeding directly to Montevideo a day early where we will overnight.  Too windy to tender in Punta Del Este.  The weather has been a complete bust for us this cruise.
