Holland America discounted airfare?

In general I have been fortunate to get great deals on international airfare through HAL. I was checking on a possible cruise around Cape Horn (Santiago to Buenos Aires) and HAL quoted me the same price I had seen on the airline company website. My question: is there something about flying to South America vs. Europe? I just disembarked the Rotterdam in October 2019 and my airfare was only $699.

All depends on what rates the cruise line can arrange. There is no guarantee the cruise line can get cheaper rates than you can, its just sometimes they do.

Take notice of the time of year.  If you book with HAL for a sailing in November or early December your airfare will be quite different than a booking after the December holidays.

After the Holidays is summer vacation for schools in SA, so families are more likely to book travel.

We just returned from that cruise and booked our air through Flight Ease.  I booked flexible air the first day it was available.  I kept looking every so often.  We finally ended up re-booking the air 3 times and changing airlines.  We ended up paying about $1,200 less pp than the original booking (business class).  The airline you select, days of travel, and number of stops all affect the price.  We flew down on Sunday, Jan 5 and returned on Tuesday, Feb 4.  American Airlines out of Detroit.  We were pleased with the result.
