@Sdancer, I find the diet/exercise formula is both/and not either/or for healthy, sustainable weight loss.  Diet is a huge component (you mentioned proper nutrition), but many of us have room to reduce calories without starving.  Portion sizes today are huge, combined with a more sedentary lifestyle.  Many people are comfort or stress eaters and don't only eat for nutrition.  Eliminating that type of eating and learning to eat for fuel generally will result in a decrease of calories.  

 

My husband and I both strength train (with a personal coach to ensure proper form and programming), but if we aren't careful with our diet and don't incorporate cardio we gain fat and not just muscle.

 

I absolutely agree that BMI is a poor measure of health.  Unfortunately it is the model used by many insurance and medical professionals.  I was much stronger, fit, and full of energy at a lean 155 than a higher body fat 135.  Perhaps someday muscle density/fat percentage will be considered as well.
