Options from Rome to Civitaccchia

We will be in Rome for a few days prior to our Celebrity Cruise.  What are the options to travel from the city center to the port on sailing day?

We have found that bundling services in large cosmopolitan locations works out wonderfully in terms of planning ease and cost.

 

At the small hotel where we've stayed in Rome (close to the Spanish Steps), the manager/concierge has assembled a driver and guide that we use separately (transfers) or in conjunction with a licensed guide (for certain attractions like the Vatican). The custom deal, which includes airport/ship transfers and those half/full tour days, when we may want the driver and/or guide, works out to be much less expensive than separately booked private group tours and limos or even shuttles.

 

Of course, like the popular hotel itself, all must be booked many months in advance.

Options?

One option is taking the train.  Perhaps the cheapest but you'll have to be able to take your luggage(s) on the train.

If you'll be in Rome a few days before your cruise, you should be able to familiarize yourself with the subway/metro/train.  Simply take the train from the Main Terminal (long walk to the Civitavecchia platform) and take the train from Rome to Civitavecchia.

There are several different trains, including the regular regional commuter train, the Civitavecchia Express train, and the Frecce trains.

 

There is also the public bus.

A lot really depends on what you are looking for...Easiest transportation?  Cheapest?

 

We've done it a few ways over the years--but always the other direction.  We will usually go somewhere else for the pre-cruise and leave Rome for afterwards...:

 

We've taken the train...It's fairly cheap, but it required taking a shuttle to the bus and a bus to the train station...then we've had to find a taxi from the train station to wherever your hotel may be.  You will have to deal with your luggage including, perhaps, lifting it overhead to storage or dealing with finding a place to put it in the rail car entry.  In the direction from Rome to Civitavecchia, it's about the same thing, but in reverse...

 

One trip, a fellow passenger arranged a Tour of Rome for us with NCC which dropped us off at our Rome hotel after visits to the Vatican, Coliseum, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain and several other sites...The cost split by 8 passengers made the price reasonable...and we were taken right from the ship and dropped off right at our hotel.  Of course, in your direction, forget this...you will have already had your fill of Rome and need to get to Civitavecchia a little quicker...

 

Another trip, we merely rented a car at Hertz in Civitavecchia and returned it at Hertz in Rome...We had a few other places we wanted to visit before getting to Rome, though...and, OTOH, it means driving a little in Rome itself--which can be an experience...In the other direction, you could do this in reverse--but not worth it for just the morning's ride.  OTOH, let's say you had several days and, maybe wanted to also visit Orvieto or Pitigliano or Tarquinia or some other places nearby, then get to Civitavecchia the day before your cruise, this would make sense...

 

This coming summer, we have arranged for a shared shuttle through NCC.  Cost for our one way ride for two from the ship directly to our hotel in Rome is €70...A bit more than the train, but well worth it for direct door-to-door service (even though we may make a couple of other stops in Rome to pick up others since this is a SHARED shuttle.
