Nelson's Dockyard - is it worth it and how to get there

We will be on Freedom in April and are thinking of going to Nelson's Dockyard to walk around but have read conflicting reports. Is it worth going to? We like history,  walking on easy trails and looking at sites - having a place for lunch too. The other question I have is getting there. We have always done the ship's excursions (I get nervous about missing the boat) but don't feel like dealing with a crowded bus and being told where to go. Is is easy to get a taxi at the pier and more importantly getting one back to the boat?

Any other suggestions on what to do are also greatly appreciated.

Easy for private taxi there and back.

As you appear adventurous for views, then suggest Sheer Rocks for lunch, they serve a delicious light lunch menu, with great cocktails, plus great high point views.  It's on the route back to the ship.

Made our second trip down to Nelsons Dockyard in Nov, with another planned for April,  the scenery down there never gets boring IMO.  The entrance fee is cheap, also includes entry to Shirley Heights.  We've been down there early ish from the ship, missing the hordes from the ships excursions. Easily arranged with the taxi despatchers on pier. Just tell them what you want to do and what time you want to be back and they will sort you out. Last time we did Nelsons, Shirley Heights, few photo stops, plus couple of hours on Jolly Beach and was still back by 2pm ish. $30/ 35 (?)each, just 5 of us in taxi. Seemed plenty of nice places to eat down near Nelsons dockyard. Castaways seemed popular for food while we were on beach, we didn't try but their beers were nicely chilled:classic_cool:
