Hamburg

One of our posts on our cruise is Hamburg and we are trying to decide what to do.

Also, does anyone know how far the train station is, and have you taken it to either Lubeck or Warnamende, and is it worth the trip?

How far is the port from town, is it walkable?

Any suggestions for other things to do will be helpful and appreciated.

there are multiple train stations about Hamburg ... and multiple rail systems .... and multiple places cruise ships will park! So your question is not easily answered.

If the ship parks at the ALTONA berth, the ALTONA train station is one of the major hubs. If at the newer STEINWERDER cruise terminal it is somewhat difficult to get to ANYWHERE but you are 'nearer' the MAIN train station Hauptbahnhof (hpt) Nord. Here you can get a train to Lubeck ... note this is 35 miles as the crow flies .... Warn' is 100+ .....

You may be able to determine where your ship will park: https://www.cruisegate-hamburg.de/en/expected-vessels/#goto-ankunft

The rail system is very efficient and tickets for 'long haul' trains can be purchased in advance on line . . .

you need more detailed info but this is a start . . .

{we found plenty to keep us busy for 3 days b4 getting on QM2 without leaving Hamburg!}

In Hamburg - Minaturwunderland

                        Take an Alster Cruise

Lots of Churches to have a look at

Luebeck is about a 50 minute train ride from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (main station) to Luebeck Hauptbahnhof.

Warnemunde is almost 2 hours away.

Kiel or Bremen are an hour away

Hamlen is an hour and a half away

Looks like we are coming into Steinwerder, which was the port that Capt. BJ said was the newest but most difficult.  Just our luck.  Thank you for your recommendations, we will look into our different options.  Maybe just stay in Hamburg.

we spent half a day at Minaturwunderland and could have stayed longer ... it is AMAZING

We did this too and agree that it was great.  Have seen many people remark that they expected to spend an hour here and ended up staying many hours.  If you are going, make sure you purchase timed tickets on line in advance to avoid disappointment.  It is very popular.

Totally agree about Miniatur Wunderland. I wanted to explore the area around it and see the opera house but we spent all our available time there. We went in the afternoon and people kept telling me that was good because it was less crowded. I’d hate to see it in the morning, because it was still pretty crowded! If you are patient, though, you can get up to see everything. We also went to the St Nikolai Memorial which was fascinating.
