Excursion or go through the locks? Help?

Which cruise line did you do the excursion through?  We booked a cruise through Carnival and one of the ports is Colon.  There is an excursion listed where we take a bus to the canal and then get on a ferry and go through the canal.  Would love to be able to touch the side of the canal!
