Do you know how long it takes to get a paper peer-reviewed?  Is it something you think happens in days?  This is a fluid situation in which the scientists are trying to figure out what’s going on in real time.  One day can make an exponential difference in lives.  They have to keep all possibilities on the table, yet make decisions as quickly as possible.  There are probably a lot of scientists out there that are trying to get to this ship to study so much about this virus as fast as they can.  It represents a unique opportunity to learn a lot that might save thousands of lives in the long run.  It could be being spread through sewage like SARS was in one big apartment building.  There are many variables, clearly.

There are situations in which peer review can be accelerated. This appears to be one of those situations.

There have been a number of papers regarding the 2019-nCoV published at https://www.thelancet.com/coronavirus?dgcid=kr_pop-up_tlcoronavirus20

These are very up to date and as other 2019-nCoV papers are published by the Lancet they will be added to that page.

They didn't declare it a global health emergency because they don't want to irate China. Declaring PHEIC is basically saying they don't believe China is doing a good. That could have meant China will close itself off and refuse to give any information at all. Sure they are still holding things back but they are at least sending samples overseas and have been far more open with information then during SARS. When you are dealing with a country like China WHO has to be delicate so they held off on the announcement and when they finally made it they very diplomatic in their wording, emphasising they still have confidence in China😉.

Sorry, I should have been clearer! I was trying to respond to the statements saying it should be disregarded because it was "unverified" and therefore people should be let off the ship b/c all the rest of the estimates have been 14 days. It was a factual correction, not a criticism of this valuable report. 

 

I other words, peer review does not equal verification. Science has processes for testing new research, and peer review is one of them.

 

But you both helped clarify that, so thank you.

I had no idea so many career diplomats, infectious disease researchers, covert military program specialist and scientists who should be head of the CDC visited Cruise Critic to opine and offer expert guidance for fellow travelers.  
 

I’m a simple traveler who returned home last night after an amazing South America cruise onboard the Coral Princess that included Antartica. There were quite a few cruisers from China, Hong along and Thailand on the voyage. We know this due to the frequent games and onboard activities where people are asked where they’re from.

 

By sailing out of Buenos Aires on January 21 it appears they must have left home before the outbreak. We had a wonderful cruise and feel blessed to have hopefully avoided exposure during our cruise. I did contract a upper respiratory crud while in Antarctica and visited onboard med facility even though we had not even heard of the corona virus at the time. Over the coming days I found myself worrying a bit more about it as word of the rapidly spreading virus began to come out and as many others coughed openly in every venue rather than staying in their cabins as I had done for 3 days when feeling my worst. I so wish people would be more respectful of others. 

 

I can also say I wasn’t excited about the long flights home and can’t imagine the stress and anxiety those traveling in or around Asia at this time. I feel for those on the Diamond. That must be very frightening and so so stressful. I can’t imagine how those must feel who are on the other ships that aren’t being allowed to dock or disembark. 
 

We are glad to be home and will keep those in the worst affected areas in our thoughts as this unfolds.

Has anyone hear any updates about the ship today.  Someone on the ship has posted photos of many ambulances on the dock

 

 

they have also said that only half of the infected patients were taken off the ship yesterday.  I also saw a post thanking Japan for sending medical personnel to work on the ship found this but can't verify it.

Japanese Ministry of Labour and Welfare said: “as of the evening of the 10th in the cruise, there were 29 Dispatched Medical Teams, Disaster Dispatched Psychiatric Teams and the Ministry of Defense, including 29 doctors, 18 nurses and 12 pharmacists.”

 

Also found this in a Japanese paper again I can't verify - saying going to let old and sick off ship - no idea what/ where they are to go and also talking about the docs and nurses going on board to (work on the ship?)

The official WHO name of the virus itself is Sars-CoV-2 .

That is the name of the SARS virus, from several years ago, and likewise, MERS-CoV is the name of the older MERS virus:
