The paper has not been peer-reviewed. Chances are it will be, and its conclusions either found well-based or not supported by the data used.

Meanwhile, scientists will keep it in mind as they cautiously approach decision times. If a lot of new cases arise in the next week, I would expect the 19th to be way off the table, regardless of whether a bunch of guesses say 14 days with only one study saying 24.

Do you know how long it takes to get a paper peer-reviewed?  Is it something you think happens in days?  This is a fluid situation in which the scientists are trying to figure out what’s going on in real time.  One day can make an exponential difference in lives.  They have to keep all possibilities on the table, yet make decisions as quickly as possible.  There are probably a lot of scientists out there that are trying to get to this ship to study so much about this virus as fast as they can.  It represents a unique opportunity to learn a lot that might save thousands of lives in the long run.  It could be being spread through sewage like SARS was in one big apartment building.  There are many variables, clearly.

There are situations in which peer review can be accelerated. This appears to be one of those situations.

There have been a number of papers regarding the 2019-nCoV published at https://www.thelancet.com/coronavirus?dgcid=kr_pop-up_tlcoronavirus20

These are very up to date and as other 2019-nCoV papers are published by the Lancet they will be added to that page.

Thank you for that link, much appreciated.

It’s also important not to panic but get facts from scientists.

New facts discovered every day.  So take some extra precautions.  Facts from yesterday are not facts for new virus.

Some people refused to believe anything but WHO when WHO was just less than 10 days ago didn't think this was that serious and didn't declare a global health emergency.  WHO is not infallible.  Good god, if this is related to your health, ask a few more questions.

They didn't declare it a global health emergency because they don't want to irate China. Declaring PHEIC is basically saying they don't believe China is doing a good. That could have meant China will close itself off and refuse to give any information at all. Sure they are still holding things back but they are at least sending samples overseas and have been far more open with information then during SARS. When you are dealing with a country like China WHO has to be delicate so they held off on the announcement and when they finally made it they very diplomatic in their wording, emphasising they still have confidence in China😉.

Not peer reviewed but the paper is co-authored by the Doctor who discovered/raised the alarm about SARS in 2003. His data is based on 1000 infected patients.

Sorry, I should have been clearer! I was trying to respond to the statements saying it should be disregarded because it was "unverified" and therefore people should be let off the ship b/c all the rest of the estimates have been 14 days. It was a factual correction, not a criticism of this valuable report.

I other words, peer review does not equal verification. Science has processes for testing new research, and peer review is one of them.

But you both helped clarify that, so thank you.

Totally agree, the moderators merged these type of threads on the Carnival page, I think it also needs to be done on the Princess page.

agree also - 'lock' these 2 long threads and start a single new thread to combine all future threads about Diamond

CB needs its' own ...

I had no idea so many career diplomats, infectious disease researchers, covert military program specialist and scientists who should be head of the CDC visited Cruise Critic to opine and offer expert guidance for fellow travelers.

I’m a simple traveler who returned home last night after an amazing South America cruise onboard the Coral Princess that included Antartica. There were quite a few cruisers from China, Hong along and Thailand on the voyage. We know this due to the frequent games and onboard activities where people are asked where they’re from.

By sailing out of Buenos Aires on January 21 it appears they must have left home before the outbreak. We had a wonderful cruise and feel blessed to have hopefully avoided exposure during our cruise. I did contract a upper respiratory crud while in Antarctica and visited onboard med facility even though we had not even heard of the corona virus at the time. Over the coming days I found myself worrying a bit more about it as word of the rapidly spreading virus began to come out and as many others coughed openly in every venue rather than staying in their cabins as I had done for 3 days when feeling my worst. I so wish people would be more respectful of others.

I can also say I wasn’t excited about the long flights home and can’t imagine the stress and anxiety those traveling in or around Asia at this time. I feel for those on the Diamond. That must be very frightening and so so stressful. I can’t imagine how those must feel who are on the other ships that aren’t being allowed to dock or disembark.

We are glad to be home and will keep those in the worst affected areas in our thoughts as this unfolds.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infections Diseases at the US National Institutes of Health, is currently on NPR's show 1A.  It's very interesting.  If you can't tune in now, I'm sure you can download it from your local NPR station.

Has anyone hear any updates about the ship today.  Someone on the ship has posted photos of many ambulances on the dock

Image

they have also said that only half of the infected patients were taken off the ship yesterday.  I also saw a post thanking Japan for sending medical personnel to work on the ship found this but can't verify it.

Japanese Ministry of Labour and Welfare said: “as of the evening of the 10th in the cruise, there were 29 Dispatched Medical Teams, Disaster Dispatched Psychiatric Teams and the Ministry of Defense, including 29 doctors, 18 nurses and 12 pharmacists.”

Also found this in a Japanese paper again I can't verify - saying going to let old and sick off ship - no idea what/ where they are to go and also talking about the docs and nurses going on board to (work on the ship?)

Interesting. From Japan Times article above:

"The decision to let elderly people and those with chronic illnesses leave was apparently made in consideration of passengers grappling with extreme stress during their prolonged isolation on the ship. As of last Wednesday, about 80 percent of the 2,666 passengers were age 60 or older, with 215 in their 80s and 11 in their 90s."

Not true, NBC. 😔

Covid-19 is the name of the lung desease cause by the virus.

The official WHO name of the virus itself is Sars-CoV-2 .

That is the name of the SARS virus, from several years ago, and likewise, MERS-CoV is the name of the older MERS virus:

"Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV)."

 from WHO own site.

That's why the new one is called Sars-CoV-2.

Hmm....

"WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged countries to step up measures to detect and contain the virus, especially in at least 30 countries with weaker health systems, where it could create havoc.

The virus has been named COVID-19, for coronavirus disease 2019, with no geographical association, he said."

The Director General himself called the disease "COVID-19" in remarks he made to the media today, which is why many news outlets are reporting it as such:

"Now to coronavirus.

First of all, we now have a name for the disease:

COVID-19. I’ll spell it: C-O-V-I-D hyphen one nine – COVID-19."

https://www.who.int/dg/speeches/detail/who-director-general-s-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-on-2019-ncov-on-11-february-2020

Of course elsewhere on the WHO website (including in the URL above) its still called 2019-nCoV

So the World Heath Organization is lying on their website as to the remarks their Director General made?

Lying? No. Incorrect information on their website? Yes.

These are the guys who name the virus:
https://talk.ictvonline.org/

Not the WHO.

"severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2" (SARS-CoV-2).
