Board with wine in hand or leave in luggage with porters?

You are not permitted to bring alcoholic beverages onboard at port stops...however, I have purchased liquor to bring home at various ports (eg. St Maartin where it's very inexpensive) and I have never been asked to even check it when I returned to the ship...I just pass it through the scanner with my other items....and it's ignored.   Net...depending on the cruise/port/your appearance/perhaps the setting of the moon...they just let you take your purchase to your cabin. 

 

Finally, to make this a more complete post:

 

If you are cruising back to back, any wine/liquor they do hold on the first cruise will most often be returned to your cabin the last night of the first cruise (for packing)...but since you are staying on-board, you will now have to store that wine/liquor in your cabin for the second cruise or drink it to avoid the inconvenience of having to take it home 🙂

 

I'm not suggesting that anyone flaunt the rules.....just injecting some reality vs fears/the written word.

You are correct.    We do b2b's quite often.    We have purchased a bottle of Grey Goose on first leg and were allowed to pick it up the night before the last day of the cruise so of course had it in our room for cruise 2.

I've been on another cruise and heard a very loud discussion in the hall on embarkation day between a cruiser and an officer regarding wine (in this case red) the cruiser had packed in his checked baggage which had broken and damaged luggage and clothing belonging to other guests. (I was very thankful I had carried all of mine on.) Basically he was informed that he would be assessed the cleaning fee for their clothing as well as luggage replacements - and after he was getting loud and aggressive was informed that if it continued he would be escorted from the ship as well. Being from NYC I did not look out and around to see who it was (I passed the officer in the hall as I was going to my cabin and the discussion was starting - and I was headed to the spa for the raffle) so I do not know if he was escorted off or not. But he was definitely being held responsible for damaging others' luggage.)

We have a great neoprene 2 btl carrier with a handle.  Never had an issue carrying it with us.  Sold in  good wine stores or online.

 

In your  luggage is asking for trouble.. We took  small sampler set of Tequila home in checked luggage and it leaked.  Luckily we wrapped it in plastic and cover  our clothes with dry cleaner plastic.   Also lucky that the better tequila did not leak.....just the regular!  We did better with Curacao liqour sample btls but its taking a chance!

If you are going to fly home from your final port, you have to pack the wine/liquor in your luggage anyway, it can't be in your carry on.  How is this different than putting it in the same luggage when boarding the ship.  If it can break in your luggage boarding the ship, it can break on the way home on the airplane.  Just pack it well so it's not next to something hard or the side of the suitcase...and bring some bubble wrap or waterproof bags (even trash bags will do) with you to protect the bottle(s).

I have some insulated thermal wine bags that I bought at a winery in Niagara. Pack my alcohol between layers of clothes with more clothing in between and on top.  Done this for years without issues.

I only buy in St. Maarten as so cheap and they deliver to the ship. Been using the same supplier for many years and always arrives in my cabin on last evening. It's a long walk back to port in the heat.

Would rather not deal with a mess upon  boarding the ship...At home much easier!

Once packed cough syrup that leaked...spent pre cruise in our hotel washing a few things..lucky we do use the plastic bags !

Update!  We boarded the Edge yesterday with our friends and four bottles of wine packed in one  carryon.  Security questioned the four bottles, verified with our friends that two were their’s and away we went.  No issues whatsoever!   

 

On another note, we love the Edge so far.   Quite different from other Celebrity ships and definitely things we like better on the older ships but we could absolutely get used to sailing the new class of Celebrity ships!

What's stopping me from bringing two bottles on when we board and an additional two bottles the next day when we embark?

 

Security won't know the difference or are you only allowed to bring it on the first day?

The policy is 2 bottles of wine no hard liquor at the port of embarkation only.  They may or may not confiscate if you attempt to bring on at a port of call and possibility it might not be returned at the end of the cruise.

Unless you plan to take your luggage with you when you head into port on the second day, it will be obvious to security that you are not "embarking", that you are simply returning to the ship.

Most ports I have been to you drop your checked luggage off with porters before security. So it would be very normal to clear security with a smaller bag or smaller bags.

The majority of passengers that I see have carry-on luggage that is different from the day packs or other small bags they typically take when heading into port. As few passengers check in on the second day, anyone found to be carrying on wine would undoubtedly be challenged if security is on its toes.
