Elite members can purchase the lower cost insurance through Princess and be upgraded to the Platinum insurance.  While the insurance itself does not cover a 'cancel for any reason' clause, it will cover you for medical and similar documented reasons up to 100% of your non-refundable costs.  If you cancel for a non-covered reason, such as changing your mind, that claim will go back to Princess and you will be given a 100% credit that can be used within the next year.   

Now, I don't know this for certain but, one of the travel agents on a Princess FB page stated that the lower cost standard insurance that is purchased through Princess, you can still receive a 75% future cruise credit (instead of the 100%). It's important to know what is in these policies as I've been reading that many of these insurance policies don't necessarily provide coverage for cancellations out of fear of a deadly outbreak.   The only ones that would are those that contain a cancel for any reason clause.  

I usually just get the standard Princess insurance and am upgraded automatically to the Platinum coverage.  Of course, the premium for the coverage is never refundable.

I know this is a popular cruise for Chinese passengers.  They say about 20% of the passengers. Right now it looks like they would be denied boarding. Right?

Hong Kong media are reporting on Saturday evening that an 80-year-old cruise passenger has been tested positive for the Wuhan coronavirus, pending further testing.

 

Early reports are suggesting that his cruise itinerary involved a stop in Kagoshima and he had not visited mainland China the entire trip. Prior to the vacation, he had visited a local hospital for follow-up on Jan 15.

 

Ming Pao reported that the man flew to Tokyo on Jan 17 and went on the Jan 20 Yokohama > Kagoshima > Hong Kong voyage. Diamond Princess arrived and left Hong Kong on Jan 25, the first day of Lunar New Year. 

 

The man reported that he has been coughing since Jan 15 and developed a fever on Jan 30. But it is important to note for now that it cannot be concluded that if the five-night voyage was "in the loop".

 

Authorities are investigating if the old man caught the virus from his wife, who might have recently made trips to mainland China. It is now known that your healthy family member may still pass you the virus - a Taiwanese man had returned from Wuhan and infected his wife with the virus, while he has shown no symptom.

 

It is also entirely possible that he caught the virus locally in Hong Kong after the trip, as incubation period for the novel virus is believed to be 2-14 days.

 

 

 

People who have been to Hong Kong on the way to Australia for RCL cruises are being denied access to the ship.

Visiters from China are banned too on other lines including NCL.

Just wanted to mention that there is a major  nation wide insurance company that may offer specific cruise policies that can be purchased until final payment. Cancel for any reason policies can be expensive, but this could possibly be an option. 

 

Try to search on specific CRUISE insurance policies.

After learning of this man being on the Diamond, I sure wouldn’t risk being on that ship. It’s really scary!  I’d call Princess and see if you can somehow get more info. as to whether they’re investigating onboard, disinfecting, etc. Has Princess even been notified that they had a positive pax onboard??

As the letter from RCL says, those transiting Hong Kong will be denied boarding. Princess, so far, is excluding Hong Kong transits as a reason to deny boarding.

I talked to Princess.

The ship is currently in Yokohama and no passengers are allowed to leave yet.

They are monitoring the situation and will update when more information is avaliable.

They announced it on Fox Business, this afternoon, that the Diamond is being quaranteened for 24 hours in Yokohama Harbor.  Japanese officials will inspect.

i think all should sit tight and see what Princess does.

The cruisers on the Feb 4  Diamond roll call posted the cruise was cancelled.  No other information right now.

A TA posted a copy of the letter he received from Princess on another forum. I took a screenshot of it. Princess are offering generous compensation.

How about the CREW that takes care of you and entertains you and pampers you and feeds you....I would think THEY need more thoughts than anyone....AND they are losing money if there are no passengers to tip!

I should of said Great attitude instead of just good and a Gentleman  instead of just a ‘guy’. He should get some special onboard perks before he disembarks for being so understanding.
