There seems to be no reports of new infections today. Fantastic! Of course, I know that doesn't mean they have identified everyone on board with the virus, but maybe things are heading in the right direction.

David Abel was live recently and they didn't see any ambulances at the pier so hopefully it remains that way for the rest of the day.  Would be wonderful if the passengers and crew could get through a day without more numbers being added to it.

I was just reading a post from someone who said her husband has been taken to the hospital today and she learned that he has tested positive for Corona Virus within the past hour.  So I suspect there will be another announcement coming.  Sadly.

So sad.  thanks for giving us the update.

I saw that they get results 5 hours after their test.  Can't imagine just how difficult it is.

You believe the chances of getting infected are higher on the ship, but this is just your opinion. 🙂 A lot of people don't agree with you.

It is my opinion that the passengers and crew are best left on the ship until the end of the quarantine or until they are cleared medically.

Yes, absolutely an opinion. I was putting myself in their position, on a ship where the number infected is approaching 10%. Where more cases continue to be detected. Outside of China no such spread has been found.

So I stand by my personal opinion that if I were not infected I would take an option to move to a new facility away from that ship.

The quarantine is not for the benefit of those onboard, it is not trying to stop the infection around the ship, it is to stop the infection getting off the ship, so hence I would want off the ship.

Absolutely no judgment on those who would prefer to stay.

Can you elaborate on your experience? I mean, this thread is over 1,500 posts. Details are what we are about.

Exactly why isn't the ship designed to "house large numbers of people in a static location for weeks"? What do you mean? What system are vulnerable to this use?  I understand that stateroom cleaning and related activities aren't running as normal, but beyond that, what do you mean?

Well, I had a long post written but it kind of gets into issues that are controversial in the cruise ship industry and really could lead us into a lot of off topic places.   My two main points are that cruise ships are designed and engineered to move with passengers for the most part spending a limited amount of time in their cabins, and that the complex systems onboard are maintained by skilled specialists, some of whom may have been removed from the ship.

Ships are not "plug and play" as many rich yacht owners find out when they bite off more than they can chew, stuff is continually breaking and what isn't broken needs maintenance.   The water in your house comes from a city plant maintained by specialist engineers, the water onboard is made by the crew.   Waste in your house goes to a treatment center run by specialists, waste onboard is dealt with by the crew.   Garbage at home goes to the landfill, I have no idea what they are doing with the garbage onboard which is a biohazard.   This situation cannot continue indefinitely without something giving, and with crewmembers being affected by this virus odds are that at some point the only people onboard qualified for a certain technical and necessary repair will not be available and lesser qualified or unqualified people will attempt it.   This could impact the quality of services that you receive, lets just leave it at that.   I would really prefer to be in a municipal environment where (at least so far) the qualified people are still running the necessary services that we all take for granted,

I agree with you. I would do the same.

This article is now 18 hours old - before I read it I had not realised that ship has the highest infection rate of coronavirus anywhere in the world.

As I scroll through all of these posts I just stop and think how terribly helpless these  people must feel...all of whom spent lots of money in the expectation of an exciting 14 day cruise only to end up as a prisoner on a ship.....with the only immediate hope of escape having symptoms or compromised enough that they test you and you are positive. Then  you get to go to another prison until they release you...all the while hoping you don't get really sick and have complications. And then I think of the families of all these people...lots of speculation about Feb. 19th and what will really happen then?
It might be time for some to take a break from this thread.

No. The opposite has been announced. For example, Mr David Abel has said that after he and his wife has finished their 14 day quarantine, provided they don't test positive, they will not have to go into further quarantine.

Don't count on it.

Unless the quarantine on the ship is extended until there are at least a full 14 days of no new cases presenting, Japan would be negligent to let them loose in their country without some additional quarantine period off the ship.

And if Japan lets them off without that additional quarantine period to go to a flight home, there probably is a strong likelihood of a quarantine period in their home country when they land

All the German Corona Cases are related to firm that was visited by Chinese coworker who was infected through her family who lived in Wuhan. The whole employees who were in contact with that person were all quarantained at once.  All of those 14 got tested postive one by one! 2 more family members were infected, too. No one in critical condition- some already home again. BUT THAT HAPPEND  WHILE THEY WERE IN QUARANTAINE. So IMO it does not matter in which facility one is quarantained!

If you are infected you get it and that´s that in all German cases without symptomes at all!

You obviously don't understand what an incubation period is. To put it simply it is the time between a person being infected with a virus to when the virus has multiplied sufficiently in the new host so that symptoms are apparent and any samples contain enough of the virus to be identified.

A quarantine merely allows those people suspected of having been in contact with the virus to ride out the incubation period whilst not coming in contact with anyone else during that period.

Your example did not indicate whether the group had been in individual quarantine, under strict conditions, or if they were merely quarantined at home. Also no timeline is given so there is no way to know whether the family members were infected before the quarantine, or during the quarantine as you imply.

Per the CDC there appears to be asymptomatic transmission of the virus - https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-02-13-20-intl-hnk/h_8d935a8b6df385aba0cbfdb30cd3aeac

I believe that the Japanese authorities have been testing those who manifest symptoms and those in close contact w/ them, the results of those 492 tests (unknown how many were retests of the same individual) were 218 positive, so of those tested approx. 44% positive. I’m wondering how many will test positive from the next batch of tests which I believe are of passengers who have no symptoms and no close association with a known positive.

Asymptomatic transmission is not uncommon and has been associated with a number of illnesses over the years (centuries?).

Yes, it is going to be very interesting to see what the results of the testing of all remaining passengers show. The percentages were definitely skewed with the current numbers diagnosed with the virus.

In case anybody is trying to make this decision for real, I would get off of the ship if I had a choice.

The internet will work better, too.

a) There will be no Internet at the land based quarantine building

b) There will be no access to a telephone at the land based quarantine building

c) Staff at the land based quarantine building will not be English speaking

d) There will be no medical staff at the land based quarantine building

If a person does not have a cell phone that can work with Japanese cell phone providers, then the person will have no Internet or phone service at all.

I would rather be on the ship with the services that Princess is providing.

I can certainly understand and respect your reasoning.  I would choose the land based quarantine.

a) No further chance of getting infected on the ship, choosing safety over comfort.

b) Setting a solid date for last potential exposure.   Should general quarantine extend, your days will be numbered.

c) I love Japanese food.

has someone read somewhere that there will be no internet or call in land based quarantine or is it just by word of mouth.

Reason I am asking is the Japanese Authority has just give all the ship new iphones with app already to help with meds counseling etc. Or are these just for those who opt to stay on he ship

Just some (to me surprising) info: Apparently the people evacuated from Wuhan and confined in California are far less isolated from each other than is the case on the ship.

(Tried to post the link but couldn't get it to work - it was on CNN though)

So the earlier suggestion/hope to fly people out to the US would probably not have improved the situation after all.

I agree with this.  IMO it is the only thing that makes sense.

undecided ... would prefer to make a decision based on knowledge of where I would be taken and who would be responsible for my care.
David on the ship said today that Alan who had been taken to hospital was having conflicting test results and now has no confidence in the medical staff.  As of today he is not permitting doctors to enter his room.
The worst possible outcome is he did not have the virus when he arrived at the hospital but then contracts it.

All the crew really should be in quarantine too but guess unless they show symptoms they will be expected to put in a full days work.
Passengers should have been repatriated back to their own countries for quarantine the same as when the virus broke out in Wuhan.  Flights were sorted and all the right actions taken.
The ship is like a floating mini city with the highest numbers of confirmed cases outside of China.
