Private excursion from Tilbury to London

Recommended Posts

I have no personal experience but Tilbury is not at all convenient for London. I did a quick search and came up with https://www.toursbylocals.com/tilbury-london-highlights-private-tour They use a standard London Taxi which carries four and charge $656 for a full day (Entrance fees and meals are extra).

https://www.toursbylocals.com/Tours-Tilbury-London is another, but they use a van which accommodates  six.

You can go by train and several routes are possible, depending where you want to go: https://tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/

eg:

Tilbury Town Rail Station  to West Ham 29 min

West Ham Underground Station viaJubilee line to Westminster 18 min

The other obvious option to mention is taking the train all the way from Tilbury Town to Fenchurch Street (its London terminus), which takes about 45 minutes. Fenchurch Street station is 5 minutes' walk from the Tower of London.

And ISTR that there's a shuttle bus that goes from Tilbury Riverside (which is basically at the cruise ship terminal) to Tilbury Town that's intended to connect to the trains from Tilbury Town.

Also wondering what to do from Tilbury. Thinking of getting the ferry across to Gravesend and then train to Dover returning via Margate. We're in port 9am to 9pm. I checked some timetables and fares on National Rail and it would cost around 80 pounds each. Does this sound about right or is there an all day train ticket that would be more economical? Thanks for any information.

(Hope it's ok to jump in on this post, looking for more Tilbury info).

Some other possible ideas here: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2586894-cardriver-service-recommendations-needed-ex-tilbury

£80 sounds like too much to me. On a quick look at the National Rail website, it looks to me like you should be able to do Gravesend to Dover, Dover to Margate, Margate to Gravesend on a Gravesend-Dover-Gravesend ticket, breaking your inbound journey at Margate (which is permissible on many ticket types). An off-peak ticket looks like it's £27.90. But that's quite a lot to be doing in a 12-hour port stop, especially as you're crossing to the other side of the river, and I think you'd be carrying a reasonable amount of disruption risk.

Thanks for that information.

We're now thinking it's a bit too much trouble to do on our own and think we'll join a tour that a fellow roll call member has arranged, going to Dover and the castle etc. Not cheap but does take out the worry of getting back in time for the last Gravesend-Tilbury ferry (which is 7pm).

Thanks.
