Interestingly, I just read a review on the AIDA board and those ships do not have an MDR.  They have up to five buffets, although it seems they all serve the same things...  My favorite buffets are on the S class of Celebrity.  EM

This is what I've been thinking some ships/some cruise lines would move to in the future as the included food option. Lots more extra cost restaurants and more buffets.

Obviously the buffet quality sucks on most cruise lines, so much food and money is wasted, flu's, noro, etc. shared with everyone!

Isn't it time for the buffets to go away and have smaller eateries (food courts)? So much space is wasted in the buffet area! More free food options, smaller portions=saved money by the cruise lines.

IDK, it's been on my mind and wondering if I'm the only one that feels this way!

I am anti buffet on sea and land.

Get rid of the MDR  instead.

I don't know how one can say there is more waste with buffets. In appearance maybe because it is so easy to see half eaten plates on tables. But to be fair, you would then have to be standing in the MDR kitchen as they bring back all the plates to see how much food gets scraped off.

As far as quality of food at the buffet, I have been mostly happy with Celebrity.

IMHO,  I should've stated. But I do read the reviews, and many are expressing how bad the buffet food has gotten. So I'm right 😉

Lots of people like it well enough to eat there, so no, you are not right.  You just want something different.  Which is fine, but you haven't convinced anyone.

There are some cruisers who sail simply for the food.  The more choices the better.

I personally try to eat most meals in the MDR and specialty restaurants.  The more pax that frequent the buffet, the more comfortable my venue choices are.  Plus, I usually walk more on a cruise than at home (and some of that is my fault being on my computer posting to CC!), and I lost 4 lbs. on last week's sailing.

I'm really 'into' food and the Oceania Terrace Cafe (buffet) pleased me enormously.

While I'm not typically a fan of buffets, just stay away if it doesn't interest you.

I'd rather have a cruise line figure out a way to no release the lock on the bathroom door until people wash their hands properly.  That is the true way noro spreads.

I nominate you to be the hand washing monitor.

Most of the midnight buffets have gone the way of the dodo.  I know that we often eat breakfast at the buffet on Oceania ships, but you are not allowed to serve yourself, someone behind a glass partition serves you the food.

All the meals are served like that.

Celebrity has excellent buffets with a grill for made to order items like steaks and theme nights. Funny because the MDR is going downhill and I have been sailing them for 28 years.

Back to getting rid of Buffets, In Atlantic City they built a billion dollar casino and decided no buffet. Bankrupt and closed in a year.

Seriously?

I can find better food any day of the week in Boise than I've had on the mass market cruise lines.  If I were traveling for food, I'd book a ticket to Barcelona, or Rome.

We thought the Oceania food was really good but suspect our cruising is going to be limited. I'm with you, especially on Barcelona.  We're doing a Baltic/Scandinavian cruise in the fall because it hits SO many ports that we'd not want to do them all in one trip independently. Including three days in St. Petersburg.

Then how do you taste test and put it back if you don't like it.  😁

There are a lot of things I like on cruises, and some I don't.  But what I don't understand is why, if there is something I DON'T like, but on the clear evidence a lot of people DO like, that thing should be eliminated.

Don't like the buffet?  Simple solution: don't eat there.

Simple enough for sure.   Sadly some can't abide by others not adhering to their likes & dislikes.

With the exception of Remy on the two larger Disney ships, I'd agree with you.  I live in the Orlando area and we definitely have a major food (and wine/craft cocktail/craft beer) scene happening here.  With a few exceptions, the best restaurants are not in the tourist corridors, and to be honest, the locals don't like to give away information on the best places so they don't get overrun with tourists.

PS--Warsaw Poland has a growing foodie scene, it's not overrun with tourists, and the prices are exceptionally reasonable still.  😉

I don't think that the biggest waste problem with buffets is peoples plates but all the food they throw away when the buffet close.
