NYC Parking options

What are parking options (besides the $40 per day at the terminal) for the manhattan cruise terminal? 

Last time we did the hotel package with parking, but don't need or want a hotel this time. We just need parking only- preferably outside the city (neither of us want to drive downtown, so we'd like to park and then get an uber in). Is our best bet long term airport parking ? (cruise is a week long) and if so will the uber be able to get inside the lot to pick us up or will we need to drag all our luggage to the exit? Usually those lots have the arm preventing exit/entry unless you take a parking ticket.

Just where are you driving in (from) to NY - which airport are you thinking of, forget LGA ... EWR or JFK long-term parking plus Uber into & back out AREN'T going to result in much, if any, savings over $280 for the week by doing MCT pier's rooftop parking.   Commercial/private garages nearby could save you a little - depending on your vehicle (SUV, minivan, pickup truck or oversized/height/length/width = extra daily chargs $$$) 

 

Weekend cruising - embark/disembark ?   Please provide more details ... parking on NJ's waterfront on the Hudson is a possible, but you will need to use the ferry for the Hudson crossing to save = able to manage luggage.

 

More details for better / practical advice and possible solutions.

Good points. We are coming from the south, so we'll pass right by Newark airport. We have a minivan. I don't pack light either so I'll have full size luggage. The cruise leaves and returns on a Sunday.

Assuming you can handle your luggage for a short distance, you may want to consider parking at the NY Waterway Port Imperial ferry terminal in Weehawken. There are two parking garages, one costing $22 per day, the other $20 per day.  Ferry fare is $9 per person one way for an adult, $8.25 for senior or disabled. The ferry goes to West 39th St. and 12th Ave., about a half mile south of the Manhattan cruise terminal. There are a couple of other routes that operate from Port Imperial at certain times so make sure you take the ferry that goes to W. 39th St. You can get a taxi or Uber there for the short ride to the cruise port.

Thanks! The parking right at the cruise terminal looked full the last time we were there, and we read you can't reserve it ahead of time (it's first come, first served). We would not be able to be there first thing in the morning since we are likely driving up the morning of. Does it typically fill to capacity on cruise departure days?

The only time I've seen a problem is in the peak late summer early fall cruise season where more ships are operating from Manhattan.  When are you cruising?

Even in peak season if you get there by noon you shouldn't have a problem. You don't have to be there first thing in the morning.

End of June. We expect to be there by noon but of course with traffic etc you never know.

It will cost you more to park in Newark and Uber than parking at the pier. I think that’s your easiest option.

Certainly the easiest. And, when you add transport to the cruise terminal, perhaps not much more expensive.  For a cruise (coming from CT) we consider parking at the Stamford station ($12 per day/ $84 per week),  Metronorth to/from Grand Central  ($30 RT for two), and taxi to/from pier ($40+/-) which total of $154 saves $126 over pier parking. However, car service door to door comes to about $250 and is a lot easier.

If you really want to avoid driving into NY, you can do a park and fly at a Newark hotel (there are packages that do NOT include a room, so cost less than park sleep fly).  Then take the hotel's free shuttle to Newark airport, and from there, the Carnival shuttle to the pier.  

 

This will drop you off, and pick you up, right at the terminal.
