Cruise Ship Locations - During the cruise ship ban of 2020/2021/2022

I think this has a lot to do with it.

There are many other vectors it can, and has been passed on, so I don't think that is a major issue. Basically, if it was on the ship otherwise, the fact buffet food is served wouldn't stop it spreading.

Neither did the Pacific Explorer. In fact I don't remember reading of any P&O ship with Covid-19 cases. Perhaps to do with their staff serving food and not self-service.

It probably has more to do with the itineraries they were running.

It is no coincidence that all of Australia's CV-19 cruises were trips to NZ, with the sole exception of the Artania.

The yanks love coming to Australia and going on cruises to NZ.  It allows them to kill 2 birds with one stone, visiting both Australia and NZ, with only one trans-Pacific return flight required.  In comparison with South Pacific cruises (which is what Pacific Explorer was doing), there is always a much higher number of yanks on board these cruises.

America is by far and away the biggest source of CV-19 infections in Australia.  It is highly likely that the passenger who took CV-19 onto the Ruby Princess was an American (or less likely a European).  With so many more Americans on the NZ cruises, it was always more likely that these cruises would be hit by CV-19.

The Pacific Explorer did go to Singapore in January/February. Singapore was already into Covid-19 reaction with temperature testing and banning of people with Chinese passports at the time.

Agreed. It was already spreading in the US to the extent some companies were working from home early March at the same time they were entering Australia for cruises. But as you say they preferred some cruises to others.

Further to that, it's quite difficult for overseas travellers to book P&O Australia cruises, so this is probably the main preventative factor benefiting P&O to my mind.

But it did not carry any pax out of there, and was sailing two weeks empty without passengers so there was minimal chance for anything to get on board (only limited workers) and even if anything did it most certainly died onboard, hence no infections on crew or subsequent passengers.

This operation is currently underway in Sydney Harbour between Spectrum and Radiance. The Ovation is swapping with the Solstice and will sail tonight for Bali. I heard Captain Henrik's announcement on another forum and the reaction of the crew to this news was lots of cheering etc

They went into dry dock and returned to Sydney with crew only. They had no cases onboard so did a 3 night cruise on return with a stop in Eden which was cancelled when the ban announced and returned to Sydney.

Interesting. So Ovation and Spectrum are heading off to Asia, leaving Australia since we don't want them...

I agree with your comments. On our last NZ cruise (Sea Princess, 23rd Feb to 8th March 2020) out of 1,900 passengers there were more than 400 Americans, and incidentally roughly the same amount of Brits. A few years ago, there would have been a couple of dozen only from each of those countries.

Viking Orion is still in Port Phillip Bay and Golden Princess is tied up at Staion Pier. Pacific Aria is off Adelaide. According to Cruise Mapper, Radiance of the Seas is off the Victorian Coast east of Wilsons Prom and Voyager of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas and Celebrity Soltice are off the southern NSW coast heading south. Heading to Melbourne?

Those 4 ships that left Sydney are showing either Bali or Singapore as their destinations in marinetraffic.

Obviously taking the scenic route along the Great Ocean Road.

None are showing as expected arrivals in Vicports. However, Glorious Leader is due tomorrow.

Perhaps bunkering in Melbourne before continuing around to the west coast and onto Bali and Singapore? Certainly the long way around. They can't even stop at the Twelve Apostles as the information centre is closed. 😀

Bunkering in Melbourne too expensive with long pilotage!

According to media - all these cruise ships bunkered, moved crews between ships & stored in Sydney harbour last night in the biggest maritime operation since WW2.

All are RCC/Cel. ships bound south about to Asian ports except Spctrum that is north about to Bali.
