krittykat Posted March 16, 2020 #1 Share Posted March 16, 2020 Today the CDC has made an edict limiting all gatherings of greater than 50 people or more for the next 8 weeks. Not sure if this would apply to cruise ports / terminals. If so, this could effectively shut down all cruises from the US for the same duration. jennmaybe Posted March 16, 2020 #2 Share Posted March 16, 2020 They only made the recommendation, not ordered it. No, I don’t believe it will apply to cruises. It also does not apply to schools or businesses.

A recommendation was made to stop gatherings of 250 or more....Not sure where you live but in Washington state, the schools are closed until April 24, fast food restaurants are converting to drive through only, churches are going online instead of in person, telecommuting is becoming prevelant . Social distancing is the new buzz word. All following recommendations. If the CDC recommend no more than 50 person gatherings....it will be taken to heart here. HalfHand Posted March 16, 2020 #5 Share Posted March 16, 2020 The CDC doesn't have the authority to "order" it. However, Monday either the federal government will or each individual state will. Hoping it will be left to the state level so those like @krittykat can be released sooner than the rest of us since they have been dealing with it the longest. Rare mking8288 Posted March 16, 2020 #6 Share Posted March 16, 2020 (edited) There is also a newly issued HAN Update to health care providers, in short, advising no cruise including river cruises in the near future and especially (but no longer the older age cohorts or at risks group) older adults. Here's my screenshot as a subscriber with the details, pushed out this evening. Edited March 16, 2020 by mking8288

There is a difference in ordering and recommending. It’s important that we are not misleading the folks reading this and thinking that it has been ordered and is mandatory. I live in NC and the only thing here, so far, is closing the schools in our county for 2 weeks. Everything else has been business as usual. In fact, we drove out and spent the weekend in Raleigh. No shortage of people out and about.

mugtech Posted March 16, 2020 #9 Share Posted March 16, 2020 NCL loves to claim that the health and safety of everyone on the ships is their number one priority. If that is true, then following the CDC advice should be automatic, cancel the next 8 weeks of cruises. This advice should, based on recent history, be heeded especially by cruise lines. How can any cruise lines have casinos and theatres open for business as usual? Even the worst shows have more than 50 people in the theatre.

This elimates pretty much all church services as well, yet in Indiana churches have been exempted from the 250 people gathering limit. At least NCL has stopped cruises for 30 days, which could be extended. Las Vegas has not shut down, other than MGM Resorts group, why pick on Cruise lines? Picking on cruise lines because this is Cruise Critic, would pick on churches if I were on Church Critic. 2

Certainly not where the OP lives. The main goal now is to slow the spread so not to overload our hospital systems. Hence the crowd size. The governor of Oklahoma was out and about last night with his family in a busy restaurant. Today he declared a state of emergency in his state. To the OP, good luck to you and your state.

This was done after the Recommendations were ignored. https://www.witn.com/content/news/Governor-Roy-Cooper-orders-North-Carolina-schools-closed-568802051.html

Port Everglades Terminal workers testing positive last week and partial shut down of port. Zero screening of anyone coming off a cruise ship in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Tampa - Friday, Sat, Sun, or Monday. Probably some 75,000-90,000 passing through the ports in past 4 days with no screening before heading home/airport. Shelves in Vancouver, WA have the appearance of post apocalyptic disaster - no canned veggies, no frozen veggies, no paper goods, etc - even things like cold medicine, toothpaste/brushes, cereal are starting to look sparse. And if you want peanut butter, rice, instant mashed potatoes, ground beef - forget it. I literally saw a back of mini van deal going down in a pet store parking lot - not drugs but toilet paper and Tide. On the plus side - traffic is at a minimum, I don't have school age children to try to entertain for 6 weeks, my hubby is a prepper so if worse comes to worse - we have MREs (lol)
