Originally yes.  However did Celebrity not try and terminate the voyage in Chile after the outbreak?  That is certainly what was being reported.  Or are you saying that Celebrity only tried to offload those passengers that would have left there and still planned to continue the last voyage as scheduled?

No one wanted us. if you were not on this trip,-your points are moot!

If we had been able to debark the ship on the 15th, the number of cases would have been very few.

Indeed this is true, so your beef should be with the Government of Chili. It was their decision to stop the ship from disembarking passengers, not Celebrities. I'm not really sure what you expected Celebrity to do. They could have confined everyone to their cabins but from there...what.

I put this to someone on another thread. Now you are Captain Leo, you have a ship load of passengers and crew. You are responsible for all these people. The perfect and preferred plan was Disembark all passengers in San Antonio. The passengers set to embark in San Antonio have already been told they will be going home no cruise for them. So you sir We'll call you Captain Foxtrot have been told nobody leaves the ship at this port. What do you do?  You have 3000+ souls on board and most of them are American where do you go? How do you treat these passengers? You are aware that several ships have been refused from multiple ports and one ship in particular (Diamond Princess) which was "Quarantined" for weeks while more and more people fell ill. So clearly in your eyes Captain Foxtrot, Captain Leo is an incompetent boob. Eclipse is now your ship what do you do Sir?

The medical staff is reporting people with respiratory problems. I would have those passengers confined to their cabins. I would have the buffet be crew served only. I would not be telling people don't worry we are a completely sick free ship. I would tell people their is always a chance people could be sick on the ship & to practice social distancing & sanitation procedures. He did stress the sanitation procedures.  So in your arm chair opinion Capt. Black at least 5.5% of the ship getting sick & at least 4 deaths is a win win situation. So if your wife was in icu near death that's perfectly ok with you. After all there was free drinks.

Out of about 3700 passengers & crew over 200 sick. That is about 5.5% of the people on the ship. In Canada that would be 1.1 million citizens sick. In the US that would be 18,000,000 cases. That is even higher than New York. With 5.5% getting sick, should I be sending a thank you card to the CEO of Celebrity?

Sorry a math error that would be 2,200,000 sick in Canada. Most of the U.S.'s deaths come from New York which is bigger than half of Canada.

These answers are all well and nice, unfortunately people with respiratory problems being confined is NOT an option. Suspect one case and the whole ship gets confined to their cabins and there is no buffet. It is locked in your cabins and the meals are delivered to you, this strategy worked very well for Diamond Princess...NOT

Also your suggestion that a reminder that people could be sick is good but a moot point in that you have had to lock everyone in their cabins because of possible but not confirmed COVID 19 cases.

So to recap The incompetent and criminal Captain Leo did stress sanitation measures if not social distancing, and he didn't lock you in your cabin, but you wouldn't have done that either. Would you have closed all the bars where people congregate? Close the Casino and all the shops?

You scoff at me as an armchair quarterback because I wasn't on the cruise. You have contempt for the Captain's decisions but you weren't on the bridge. And frankly the solutions put forward by Captain Foxtrot above weren't an option for Captain Leo. And Captain Foxtrot's solutions would not have contained the outbreak.

I'm sorry your wife got ill but she could have been exposed at any time after boarding the ship, just as all the others who were exposed.

And a number generated on a (site that cannot be named here) group can not be taken as correct. Does anyone have a properly reported number of confirmed cases that originated from the Eclipse?

My cousin died in NYC on April 14 from Coronavirus.  He and 5 other cousins were on this Celebrity Eclipse sailing. At least 4 tested positive. I don’t know if the other 2 were tested.  Out of respect for his family’s privacy, I can’t answer any additional questions.

If you got off the ship without getting sick, say a prayer of thanksgiving.  And please add a prayer for all those who came in contact with passengers who were asymptomatic, yet still contagious, as they traveled home.

See you on my 21st cruise once a better treatment or vaccine is ready. Until then, please take care.

The Zaandam used this same strategy.  Results? With half the passengers of Eclipse, they had nine test positive before landing and four dead.  Not successful.

Exactly, no good deed goes unpunished.  The rest of us see that X was there for their passengers.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

It's absolutely heartbreaking that those who are left behind are not able to honor their loved ones with a memorial/funeral/celebration of life at this time. 😢

This is an absolutely dreadful virus and my thoughts are with everyone who had lost a loved one from this disease. My uncle has been in hospital for over a month with this virus and caught it at home in his local community, his oxygen saturation is awful at the moment.

My opinion for what it's worth. There were no test kits onboard so the medical staff could not confirm if COVID 19 was onboard. Respiratory illnesses are common on cruise ships, how many people go on a cruise and get a "cruise cough"?? How could the medical staff know?? In the UK lots of people are getting tested with possible symptoms and they are negative for COVID, everyone who has a cough doesn't have COVID.

I was on this cruise and my opinion is that the virus came onboard in Ecuador when we picked up medical supplies and a passenger had to be taken off for emergency medical treatment for heart failure. My thoughts are with everyone who has lost loved ones, whose loved ones are critically ill in hospital and those recovering. I pray that our scientists find a vaccine for this virus asap.

Tell that to the families of the deceased from the Eclipse. Your empathy for them is underwhelming and your continuous praise of Celebrity quite sickening.

Sheffield, you have it all wrong.  We are all empathetic and most of us are horrified that we exposed others, like those on the Azamara Pursuit, to COVID-19.  However, given the information known at the time, most of us believe Celebrity did the right thing.  It was the CDC, HHS, and US Coast Guard that made the decision to debark.  They should be held accountable by not making us stay onboard until they knew what the test results were.

Va man, thanks for the response. Right from the start this thread has made me emotional in many ways so much so that I stopped looking at it. I came back to see if there had been any news about the people who were so sick. After reading about the death of the cousin of baseballmom2007  it was just too much for me to read Mojogurueds rather insensitive post. I have learned my lesson I will definitely not look at this post again as it makes me say things I would not normally do.

Repeat the Diamond Princess so that everyone gets sick? No thanks. People got off that ship and wound up being sick too. Where's the empathy for the Japanese families and folks passing by in the Tokyo subways?

The US Coast Guard obviously didn't want a Diamond Princess situation or they would have called for one. The passengers have to take responsibility for themselves and shelter in place after a March cruise.
