We soon moved on to our next stop - Belem . There we had hoped to see the monastery that was closed on our previous visit . Our guide went to get some of the pastries for our group and gave us some time for a quick visit . He also pointed out the long line to get into the monastery .

He suggested that we go into the church instead where there was no line .

It was immense and very beautiful inside

Joe and Pat,   Great pictures of Lisbon.Even the statues look clean and unusual.

I like going the MDR for the 3:30 tea. They usually have a great crowd . I always see quite a few men enjoying themselves at the tea.

Thanks Sali . We only went to that tea a couple of times and we want to try it in the room ( on the balcony )

After exiting the church I gave this lady some money and asked her if I could take her photo . She said yes but didn't smile .

We loved seeing the little mom and pop businesses all around Europe . The people enjoyed what they were doing with an entrepreneurial spirit . It reminds me of the old days , when I was a kid , and we used to see this kind of freedom and spirit in the US , and when making money wasn't the main thing .

Ah, those pastries!  To die for IMHO.  We've been to Lisbon 4x and I always get one.  Once in Ponta Delgado in the Azores, I visited a grocery across from the port and found a package of the tarts, but nothing like the real thing straight from a bakery!

I think I was in that same church. Very pretty.  We went back in 2009.

We were also there in 2009 on a TA on Celebrity . We did it ourselves but we saw a lot more with a guide and we were going out of the city next .

Pat was posing for a photo in the take away line but we skipped the line and went inside for coffee , fresh tarts and watched how they were being made - loved it !

Our next point of interest was the casino in Estoril , which we circled . This was, during WW II , where Ian Fleming was inspired to write Casino Royale , thus beginning the James Bond series .

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casino_Estoril

A little further along , we stopped here , next to the ocean

IMG_6474_zpsazx0drif.jpg

There was a natural arch here

IMG_6470_zpszhim2do9.jpg

IMG_6466_zpsqogybxns.jpg

And some beautiful homes

A pretty area , on the way , to the fishing village of Cascais

Cascais was not what we imagined a fishing village to be . Perhaps at one time , but more a beach resort area now .

IMG_6489_zpsss4xtu5a.jpg

Our van is behind the bus . It was a holiday , so many of the locals go to the beach , where a volleyball game was in full session .

IMG_6503_zpstikbhe8q.jpg

And there is a concrete pier with lots of traps and small fishing boats in the bay .

IMG_6507_zpsybxtafuw.jpg

I wanted to take a wide angle shot , so overlapping 4 photos , and later in the computer , a program fuses them together . Here's the shot before editing .

The edited photo

IMG_6511%20Stitch-002_zpsucxxibpv.jpg

And a view from the pier .

The next couple of stops were my favorite in Portugal .The first one was a surfing beach .

IMG_6575_zpswgc5z9oq.jpg

IMG_6572_zpsiq7soml8.jpg

DW took this photo of a young lady waxing up before going out . I enjoyed many years surfing but - wetsuits Brrr . I'm from Florida .

Cabo da Roca is the western most point of Portugal and the continental Europe .

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabo_da_Roca

It is breathtakingly beautiful to see and photograph . Our guide warned us about getting too close to the edge of the 300' sheer cliffs . Like that's gonna stop us . We were on a mission !

Most of the people went here , to the monument . They look looked like lemmings in the distance , contemplating their demise .

IMG_6581_zpsbeowoz21.jpg

Here's some of the invasive ground cover discussed in the article .

IMG_6588_zpsicdxxhva.jpg

Hanging on for dear life !

The other side of the monument

IMG_6645_zpsxsivwnuc.jpg

There was another side to view !

IMG_6646_zpsuqh7u8dl.jpg

Oh how I wanted to go further ! But this was my turnaround point .

IMG_6652-001_zpseprji4te.jpg

Jogging back to the van , time for one last photo . What a beautiful place !

And then was time to leave the beautiful cliffs and move on . We went inland and higher in elevation , into some woods making some short stops on the way . I love these bell shaped flowers .

IMG_6665_zpsuxuwhes3.jpg

I think that we were Sintra and there seemed to be a number of castle like structures in the area .

IMG_6675_zpsnl8opbbi.jpg

We then stopped at the Seteais Palace where they were having a wedding .

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seteais_Palace

It was just finishing as we arrived and time for photos .

IMG_6689_zpsag22b2m8.jpg

It has a commanding view of the city below

IMG_6679_zpswjanwhhk.jpg

And through the arch , you can see the Castle in the distance

The Pena National Palace

IMG_5049_zps6vevwk2g.jpg

It has a interesting history and is a UNESCO World Heritage site .
