Thanks for the "sorta sailaway" notice, times being what they are.  Seems like a lot of fuel will be used to send these ships long distances, but I'm sure those in command must have considered the cost of chartered aircraft, etc., vs. using the ships.

At this time, do you see the ships being docked somewhere in a longer term lay. up?

As of the present time, the various cruise ships are in "hot (or warm) layup" at several anchorages. Hot and warm layup means a mostly full set of crew and a ship that could return to service almost immediately. Carnival Corporation, incl. the Holland America group, is now moving a number of ships to "prolonged layup" status which generally means reduced crewing and limited technical operations, also meaning the ship could take weeks to be ready to return to service. Carnival has already come out with plans that see certain ships not return to full operation until October and November of this year

Do you suppose they picked the ships because of the number of passengers they could accommodate - now to be used for crew?

Don't believe so, since the HAL "ferry" ships range from a "S"-class ship (Veendam), to a "R"-class (Volendam) to a Signature-class (Nieuw Amsterdam) with various different accomodation totals
