Trans Tasman Bubble ?

Recommended Posts

Could travel between Australia and NZ resume soon ?
According to Winston both countries have “ beaten the crap “  out of the virus.

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2020/04/trans-tasman-bubble-could-happen-during-covid-19-alert-level-2-winston-peters.html

However , any such move would come with conditions .......could include a big increase in price  - social distancing , and a much longer check in - 4 hours has been suggested .
Cruising .?...imagine the queue to go ashore at a port of call .

Expect NZ/Aus bubble to open by June.  As soon as the borders open between Australia and NZ, I can see Kiwis packing their bags for their Gold Coast holiday homes.  Weather colder here - 8c - 23c, but beautiful sunny day.

We still have state borders in place though!

Kiwis are lucky they can fly direct from NZ to Gold Coast.  Do you think they will open all state borders first?

But not even Aussies can get into Qld. 😀. Who knows. Each state is doing things differently. But the Rugby players from NZ got permission to fly into NSW? If they want AFL to open up then SA and WA need to open their borders. There isn't any hint of that yet.

If everyone on the cruise  is Australian or a Kiwi and the virus is considered 'eradicated'  in these two countries, then surely non of the extra measures are needed?

Even if "eradicated" I don't think that means the risk of infection is zero. It might still pop up from pools of people who are asymptomatic, or from the foreign visitors we still have (e.g. bulk cargo crews, diplomats). I think the idea is to get the incidence of the virus down to such a low level that any virus outbreaks can be contained by a comprehensive testing scheme and quickly stomped out before they spread.

Which means that the government expects there to be further outbreaks. Even if it were an unlikely event, if an outbreak occurred on a cruise ship, what is the government supposed to do about it? It would be a huge mess that governments could avoid simply by preventing cruises. I don't see any of them taking the risk until covid-19 becomes a treatable illness that does not threaten the entire ship and the ports that she visits. That is, in several years.

No not yet https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/league/warriors/121385241/queensland-nrl-teams-cleared-to-travel-but-no-green-light-for-warriors-yet supposed to be going tomorrow. Can't believe the arrogance of the sports officials- they are some sort of special compared to every  other business

We can do a prisoner swap - the Ozzies can fly to Queenstown for the snow and we're fly to Queensland for the beach and sun!  I wouldthink that that the state borders need to open first.

Not happy!  Why special rules for footballers?  They are the ones in the news breaking the rules with regard to isolation/physical distancing.  The is a bad political move and shows lack of judgement.

Guess it depends whether states open their borders together.  Vic is not reducing restrictions until 11/5, whilst NSW Qld and NT have reduced restrictions this weekend.

The National Cabinet has brought forward their next meeting a week, so they obviously have another announcement on the cards.

No, not neccessarily correct re Victoria. The state govt will decide then whether it is possible to lift or modify restrictions depending on the number of positive cases in the next 8-9 days.

Yes that is correct.  I assumed wrongly that they would be able to reduce restrictions then

Unfortunately, I see flying returning long before cruising.

Yes because we need to get our local airlines going financially before we need to assist cruising companies. Also it help out both NZ and Australian domestic economics.

Its time to explore your own countries. Go visit some little towns that you probably just drive through. There beauty everywhere. You just only have to look around the next bend.

I don't get it either. Who gives a stuff about the professional sports. Why should they get preference.

I agree , the footballers have proven that they cannot be trusted , so why give them special privileges?

be  far better to open travel to some Nurses or Hospital cleaners  far more useful to society

Mothballing of tourist facilities is already underway . The Hermitage Hotel at Mt Cook has seen 170 jobs disappear and Queenstown has become a ghost town as Hotels Motels and Air B&Bs lie empty . Staff now unemployed have fled from the high rents of a once highly sought after destination .
The real possibility of tourists coming back is looking further and further away.

To be fair May has been the  low season in Queenstown - for ever - after Easter through to June/July  when the snow comes was always the quiet time.

It makes sens for larger places to mothball - and then look at opening up either for the ski season or summer.  I think many/most AirBNBs will become private rentals again and that will help with the over-supply of hotel rooms

Don't forget Mother's day next Sunday.  I wouldn't be surprised if they relax many restrictions even if just for the weekend.  If we see a spike in new cases in the next fortnight......

From Stuff.co.nz:

"New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will join Australia's national cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss COVID-19, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced.

They are expected to discuss a mooted "trans-tasman bubble" that would allow Kiwis and Australians to freely travel between countries."
