Would you cruise if only ports were private islands?

Every cruise line I've sailed with offers some beverages included with the fare- coffee, tea (hot or iced), milk, hot chocolate, some sort of bug juice. As for water I am perfectly fine drinking the water that they make on the ship (and which is offered at no additional charge) and the only time I will pay for bottled water is to take ashore for shore excursions.

All beverages on cruiseships are charged for but many are charged for as a part of the cruisefare.

Really? I can't say any place where beverages are free. No restaurants, shops, hotels etc. offer beverages for free here.

...and neither do those places you mention serve food for free -- but cruise ships do.

I think the idea is that a cruise ship is closer to an AI model (all inclusive) than to a restaurant or hotel.

Cruise ships are kind of in between, they are not all inclusive. Mainstream cruises have always charged for soda and bottled water. It is customary. I don’t think chintzy applies. There are plenty of beverages included. Disclaimer, I don’t drink soda and sometimes buy bottled water to take ashore to the beach.

I get your point, but I was trying to respond to the other poster that cruise ships shouldn't be compared with what restaurants and hotels offer -- no hotel I know of offers free food, but AI resorts and cruise ships do.

Alcohol has always been excluded from base fares on mass market lines, but aside from that I do feel that previously there were fewer "exclusions" than there are now. Perhaps my view is biased due to long cruising history (from early 1970s....)

I was thinking in terms of cruise ships but here in the US I can't think of any place that doesn't offer 'still' water free and many now offer 'sparkling''

Still water here is tap water. Free. They will offer sparkling water and when you get the check there will be a charge for it which they don’t mention when they offer it.....

Reminds me of the small spots in Paris - if you wanted still water at no charge, you’d ask for “eau de Paris”.

Maybe it's a Western thing but many restaurants here are 'making' their own still and sparkling waters at no charge

I have not found any here offering their own “made” sparkling water. But I have not gone to every restaurant in the DC area. [emoji3] Several offer their own still water which means it is filtered tap water. Like the water I drink at home. I filter my home tap water. I don’t drink bottled water at home.

It's not free, it's charged for as a part of the cruisefare.

I have not ever seen that in my (large) city -- eastern coast.

Only "free" still water is tap water. Any bottled still or sparkling water carries a charge.

I drink tap water (almost) all over the world. And carry my reusable bottle all over the world.

Well, I guess you're actually renting your bed linens and bath towels then?

“Making”  your own still water is not that complicated.  Any restaurant in the US has to have running water, so making it is about as complicated and time consuming as turning the tap.

Exactly.  Nothing is free on cruises.  One way or another, you pay for it.  I'm baffled that some can't understand that.

That is why I included the words "included with the fare" in the quote that was used.

Not at all. I think it's just plain chintzy of the cruise line that they charge for non-alcoholic beverages.

To this I do agree.

Yes, I understand that the desalination/ distillation of seawater/toilet water can, in these modern times, be purified to a substantial degree and I have distilled my own water in the past; I only distilled tap water. I would not mind showering in the ship  water purified, but am still squeamish about drinking ship tap water. So I do not mind paying the for bottled water. Perception is a 'funny' thing. If you 'believe' a proven innocuous something will harm you, it 'will' harm you. It will not harm someone with a different belief. The mind is a very powerful instrument. Funny thing this "It's included in the cruise fare". Nothing is really listed in the cruise documents. The cruise lines do not guarantee you in their brochures very much. It is all hush-hush. What do you 'really' need on a cruise? Clean linens, how often? A lounge chair? Only if you wake up at 6 am and place a towel and a book on it for the rest of the day, but not guaranteed. A 'free' beach umbrella for the 'sun sensitive'? Better bring one from home that attach to your free (available) lounge chair. Tips? See the kind of service you receive when tips are included (the service providers know who you are). Then there are those that wait till the end of the cruise to have the mandatory tips removed , a real 'fun' bunch of fellow passengers that complain every cruise.. Are you really sure the upscale toiletries are not filled with Dollar Store brands? DW was served a yogurt past its expiration date ( luckily she reads everything before devouring) someone else might chock it up to norovirus (it's included in the cruise fare).

But we love it.. We are cruise gluttons...

Would you cruise if only ports were private islands or just a cruise to nowhere? This would not bother me at all I like being on a ship but do want to visit at least one beach. We stay on board for many Caribbean ports and all of them that tender.

My 2 cents NO!  The reason to cruise is the new port every day and reasonably meals / entertainment value on the moving hotel.

If all I got was a round trip to their Island resort then why bother, an all inclusive mostly has larger rooms, less crowded everything, free drinks etc. etc.   entertainment of course isn't as varied but the comedy, musical, variety on a cruise are no were near the quality you can get in any major city, they are more Indian Casino level or worse...

The music charters I take have top tier entertainment, Boz Scaggs, America, Micheal McDonald, BJ Thomas etc etc

I'm baffled people don't seem to understand that some lines include things in the fare that others don't. Like water.

I'll agree with Boz Scaggs, but I don't know if I would characterize the rest as top tier.

The other thing about music charters is live music for about 12 hours a day , bands like War and Edgar Winter playing by the pool in the afternoon and Late night shows by Rita Coolidge and BJ Thomas . Also fun talking to the artists seeing them in lounges etc.

Maybe if you weren’t always so focused on arguing with everyone, you’d be able to understand what’s actually being said. You’re the only one who can’t seem to understand that things like bottled water are not free. The only difference is when you pay for them.
