Rare pinotlover Posted May 25, 2020 #51 Share Posted May 25, 2020 I go to restaurants for the great food, service, and pairing wine selections. I rarely look at the art work on the walls or the color of the paint. I go on specific cruises for the ports of call. If the walls are gray or woodsy it doesn’t matter to me. How did the food taste? This millions spent are wasted on me, but I realize it’s a big deal to some. I’m not into “ how big is your chandelier?” Others that could care less about itinerary, it’s a big deal!

That said, the ambiance of a ship is important and even the food aside I'd rather be sitting in the dining room of RG than that of McD. Cruising is an overall experience - cabins/beds, food, service, fellow passengers and yes, the ship too. I don't want to look at rusting metal, carpet stains or chipped furniture. Not big on chandeliers at all ourselves either (or their comparative size) 😂... more just interested in whether or not the environment for the important things like great itineraries, excellent food, wine and service is a well maintained and updated one with a relaxed ambience. Our hope is that the Nautica will still have the refurb it's due, to ensure all facilities are kept up to date with current expectations and optimally working, and if the decor planned is aesthetically pleasing (which it looks like it will be) then that's a bonus. Installation of USB ports, a move up from shower curtains to screens etc I'm sure will be much welcomed 😀
Rare pinotlover Posted May 25, 2020 #54 Share Posted May 25, 2020 In these difficult economic times, there’s a lot of difference between a $5 million upgrade and a $50 million one.

I too primarily am itinerary driven when picking which cruises we take and certainly choose to sail on Oceania for its amazing food and service, reasonable passenger capacity and overall ambience. However, for those who have an interest in “the art work on the walls” I highly recommend a cruise on Riviera (and Marina) for the opportunity to peruse some truly excellent artwork throughout the public areas onboard. You even can take an audio tour of the art on these ships (pick it up at Reception), reputedly all pieces chosen personally by Frank del Rio and Bob Binder. I particularly enjoy the Wilfredo Lam and Picasso prints in the Grand Bar and Casino Bar, respectively, on Riviera.

True - these are indeed difficult economic times, but my understanding is that the OceaniaNEXT program to refurb the 4 R class ships has only this one ship remaining to complete the project (with what I would think was previously allocated/budgeted operating capital.) And given that the planned refurb date of June 8 is so close, we'd imagine that most if not all of the outlay for fittings, furnishings etc would have already been made. Just think it would be a pity (and not make much economic sense) if they did not do the refurb at this time if the outlay has already been made...not to mention issues with contractual commitment to the shipping yard (which has now re-opened). Also would be great to see it finished during the forced no-sail time , so that when the green light goes on she'd be good to go - rather than needing to cancel a future cruise itinerary to eventually complete it at a later time...but we're all just guessing and hoping - we'll know soon enough what will happen I guess. In the meantime it's giving us all something to talk about 😉

Of course, things have changed a bit from when these plans were made originally - would you agree. The biggest change and challenge for O are the finances. We all have our own priorities - some would love to see Nautica refurbished now , I would love to see my $25K+ back first. Let's hope both will happen soon 🙂
Rare 1985rz1 Posted May 25, 2020 #60 Share Posted May 25, 2020 I wish I had a link to this information, but on the Oceania Cruises private Facebook page (not Oceania's official web page), a member stated that in a Zoom meeting a few days ago with Niki Upshaw, Senior VP for Sales at Oceania, she said the June 2020 refurb of the Nautica has been rescheduled for next year. Has anyone else seen this Zoom-cast or have any other information about the rescheduling?

That makes sense to me under the current circumstances. Gotta start making money before spending some more (that you borrowed at high interest and need to pay back). Playing with numbers and saying an average of $10,000 per PIF passenger, that’s 5,000 passengers that can get their money back if the FCC option isn’t taken. Which do you believe buys more loyalty, a repayment of fares or deposits ; or a refurb?

Those who booked as you said with or without a FCC that just prefer the product, in what ever state and roll their deposits forward because they have not found a adequate substitute for what they loved. ....like an old shoe it just fits right

ICT lineman Posted June 16, 2020 #67 Share Posted June 16, 2020 marinetraffice.com shows that Nautica is currently in Bacino di Carenaggio 4 (dry dock #4) at the San Giorgio del Porto shipyard in Genoa https://www.sgdp.it/facilities.php My guess and hope is that she is undergoing the OceaniaNEXT refit

They have no choice but to perform the SOLAS mandated drydock inspections and mechanical renovations that are required every five years, but cosmetic renovations are at the cruise line's option. rialannah Posted June 25, 2020 #70 Share Posted June 25, 2020 I participated in an Oceania webinar today. I asked the question when would the Nautica NEXT refurbishment occur. There were two company representatives who responded. One said it would be in July 2021. The other, I believe, said something to the effect that it would be next year with the date to be determined in the next couple of months. So still no certainty at this stage. chivatosteve Posted June 25, 2020 #71 Share Posted June 25, 2020 My interest was piqued on the Nautica NEXT refurb since we are booked on the cruise leaving 6/28/21 (Rome). That cruise still is "Available" in all categories, but the Nautica cruises leaving 7/18/21 (Lisbon) and 7/28/21 (Rome) are now all "Wait List". I suspect cancellation for those dates and NEXT Refurb.
the_travel_locks Posted June 30, 2020 Author #72 Share Posted June 30, 2020 I have just seen this posted on a Facebook group re the Nautica Refurb..."Update on the Nautica refurbishment from Nikki Upshaw, Sr. VP of Sales at Oceania: "Although dates are not firm quite yet, it appears that we will do the Nautica drydock in Spring 2021.We will have a firm date by August 1." Jake40 Posted August 8, 2020 #73 Share Posted August 8, 2020 Anyone have any updates on whether Oceania is going forward with the refurb on Nautica - I also see the wait listed cruises in July of 2021? Wondering if this is when they will be doing the refurb on Nautica. Thanks in advance - trying to look ahead with positive thoughts of being able to cruise in Fall, 2021 and use FCC.....or waiting until 2022.... Hull maint and cleaning IS the most important thing in a ships life.... not sailing is hazardous to the health of the hull... The anti-fouling paint is desiged to wear away taking with it various marine critters and stuff. Sitting they move in I once owned a boat that I had to have divers go down almost monthly to clean the hull............. The ocean is alive and not necessarily with good things.
