You are missing my point as usual.  As part of freeing up our current rules more people will die even if people follow the guidelines as happened in Australia and New Zealand.  The deaths don't just stop.  The obvious example are intensive care units.  There staff have far more protective equipment rightly than the person in the street but yet they still contract the virus.  That is because no system is perfect they  have faults and human errors.   As part of freeing up we will come across more people than we do now.  Thats the point of freeing us up.  Even if everyone follows the rules there will still be more deaths from the virus than if we didn't free up.  There comes a point however that the deaths by not freeing up from other causes outweighs the risk of freeing up.

Despite your condescending opening comment...

That's your opinion...which differs from other "experts" who claim there are "false negative deaths" attributed to Covid that aren't actually from Covid.  In any case, the fact that some countries had exponentially better success by following the guidance clearly PROVES they work - something the naysayers continue to deny over and over in their quest for wrongful justification.

May everyone be safe and healthy.  We'll certainly continue to do our part, and simply avoid the ignorant people who refuse to be knowing potential carriers of the problem. That won't stop us from cruising once that opens up...no fear mongering will prevent choices made based on facts.

How do you explain the “problem” improving...or continuing to be non existent...without your mask solution?

I don't have to explain anything...the facts show the results with and without masks and demonstrate the value, as does the numerous medical expert testimony .

People are overthinking this - either you follow the guidance or you don't. The results where they are followed clearly show they work. Mike drop.

It wasn't condescending it was my opinion on your opinions.  You have adopted a position and are refusing to consider than just perhaps other opinions my be available.   I have been "attacked" on these forums from those who feel that we need do nothing for this virus and its basically a Chinese developed attacked, I call them the Donalds and so from the likes of you who think that even cyclists being nowhere near anyone in the middle of the country require to wear a mask just in case they have an accident.  Your logic is just wrong.  If you follow it to its end then you should be wearing full protective clothing now while in your house just in case you have a sudden medical emergency.

Of course some countries guidance works, I am fully and I mean fully following my countries.  It just happens to be different from yours but you refuse to accept that ours may just be the right one for us.

My answer to the original question was that I will not go on a cruise if I have to wear a mask.  That is my choice as I feel it would destroy part what cruising for me is about.  Its about meeting new people, not about having to avoid them.  I am now out of this debate as its going nowhere just like my cruise next month.

What comes thru in your comments is your fear. I’m glad you have your mask.

Have no fear whatsoever.  That doesn't preclude being smart about safety.  We'll be among the first round of folks back on a cruise ship. So perhaps misinterpretation of comments is an issue.

Happy sailing (and soon).

If masks are required, that would mean that the cruise was sailing before there is herd immunity via a vaccine.

No vaccine, no cruising for us.  I want to enjoy many, many more years of cruising. I can forego a year or two.

And that is not fear, just not purposely putting myself in a situation that is supposed to be relaxing and wearing a mask is not relaxing.

Maybe a mask won’t be required. The WHO apparently is no longer recommending wearing a mask for most people.

“The World Health Organization is recommending healthy people, including those who don't exhibit COVID-19 symptoms, only wear masks when taking care of someone infected with the contagion, a sharp contrast from the advice given by American public health officials who recommend everyone wear a mask in public.

"If you do not have any repository symptoms such as fever, cough or runny nose, you do not need to wear a mask," Dr. April Baller, a public health specialist for the WHO, says in a video on the world health body's website. "Masks should only be used by health care workers, caretakers or by people who are sick with symptoms of fever and cough."

Regardless of the effectiveness of wearing a mask, i think if RCL requires them, they will have a uphill battle selling tickets.  Especially if~60% of cruise critic members are not willing to sail with a mask and im sure that number is quite a bit higher outside of CC.

How you came up with that conclusion is beyond comprehension...

I just went to the World Health Organization web page.  (This is a fairly corrupt organization so I can not recommend anything they say, that is my personal opinion... yours may vary)

When and how to wear medical masks to protect against coronavirus?

  • If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with COVID-19.
  • Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.
  • Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
  • If you wear a mask, then you must know how to use it and dispose of it properly.

Mic Drop....

I rest my case Junk Science

I pretty much agree about WHO, so i get my information and advice about COVID19 from the CDC.  They advise wearing a mask if you go out in public areas.

That is referencing MEDICAL masks, not the cloth masks that are recommended by most of the top docs.  Experts have said medical masks are not needed pretty much since the beginning of the pandemic.

I think you’re reading too much into the use of the word medical.  The WHO’s communications efforts at their website don’t try to make that distinction at all.

Peggy, I wear a mask any time I go into a store.  I am in the minority where I live.  That said.  When people who are not scientists tell you anything that you must follow the science.  Are assuming that science and scientists are infallible.  Therefore, I am always skeptical of anything else they say.  Because when we are dealing with unknowns, anyone who believes anything 100% are almost universally going to be incorrect.  This has all been about virtue signaling.  Which is obnoxious on its best day and disrespectful always.

JMHO and YMMV

So we should wear non-medical masks because they are even less effective?

I might agree if they said n95 masks.

I read an interesting article recently, and if I felt like rummaging around I could find it again.  It was on Forbes.com, and a research lab tested different cloth materials to see how effective they were againt COVID19 spread.  Interestingly, it seems what I decided to make ours out of came in as top for slowing down the little beastie-droplets:  tightly woven cotton, double layered.

Mr. Pcur donated his old tee shirt for the cause (he hoards tee shirts, so it wasn't much of a sacrifice), and now we have these soft, comfy, double layered masks to wear that get dumped into the washer as soon as we walk in the door.

I protect you; you protect me.

I think the distinction has been pretty clearly made for the past 5 months. It is everywhere. Just the fact that people know the difference between an N95 and a cloth mask speaks to that.

I will wear a cloth mask when venturing out of our house because the cloth mask is only designed to protect others from me if I am asymptomatic and because my trips out are necessities (doctors, etc). I won't wear one on any voluntary vacation, be it a cruise or elsewhere.  I will use our cruise money to enhance our backyard to make it more staycation fun.

To each their own.

Yep, yep, yep, and yep.

My (similar) thoughts are:  err on the side of caution; do we REALLY want to find out who's right or wrong, because the results could be very, very sick or dead?; we just all want to stay healthy and alive.

Hey...you dropped something... 🤣🤣🤣

If you can't even see the CDC and WHO agreeing on the validity, use, value, and effectiveness of masks...it ain't a gonna happen here either...

Either way, wearing a mask should not be an optional decision.  I will cruise if everyone wears a mask, but will not if some do and some don't.  Hopefully, the day will eventually come when no one will have to wear a mask.

Bottom line:  Your decision not to wear a mask endangers me!  Period! (oops, that was an exclamation point, not a period)

Absolutely, never going to happen. Neither have the best interests of the public in mind.

I tend to listen to the biological and chemical engineers and chemists in my immediate family and their colleagues. They are heavily involved in research of the virus, so it is nice to get info from the real scientists learning about this virus at the ground level. I don't trust anything the WHO or the CDC says.

Caveat: I am  immunocompromised, so I have a different viewpoint than those that are at a very low risk.
