Live cruise replay - Radiance to Alaska - August 19-26, 2016

Recommended Posts

We took a break from packing to watch a cake decorating contest on the centrum. Looks like the cruise director got the worst of it as icing began flying

Day 8 - Vancouver

Scheduled disembarkation 7:30am

I set my alarm early to finish packing and eat breakfast in the Windjammer.  It was raining outside so I kept my raincoat handy.

On the ship's forward looking bridge camera it looked like a pretty sunrise so i donned my rain coat and headed to the helipad in the rain.  It was worth it.

Downtown Vancouver.  The white spiked roof is Canada Place and the cruise terminal.

At 7am I headed out to the deck 5 with my bags to join the self-disembark line.  We were still slowly approaching the pier.

At 7:20ish Canada customs boarded.  A few crew were let off.  At 7:30am they started letting guests off.

At 7:55am I was on the Skytrain on my way to YVR airport.  Ticket cost $4.20 CAD which ended up on my credit card as $3.20 USD.  Pretty darn cheap airport transfer.

We arrived at the airport at 8:25am.  Through the process and at the gate at 8:50am with plenty of time to kill before my 11:16am flight.   Having a Nexus and Global Entry card helped immensely and saved me at least 45 minutes.

I noticed something else now that I was in Canada and at the duty free shops in the airport.  Even the bears are friendlier here.

Hello and thanks to all who joined in. I didn't shoot many pics today as we were busy getting off the ship. One of the joys of cruising into Vancouver is we can just grab a rental car right at Canada Place and drive home to Seattle. One way has run between $50 and $80

A beautiful day for driving home. At the border

Shortly after leaving Bird Creek the rains hit so that ended the highway exploration. We continued on to Seward and our home for the night two night, Murphy's Alaskan Inn. Sorry but what a dive, paper thin walls and an odor that is not pleasant. Oh well, as small as Seward is and as late as we booked we can't be too picky.

We stayed at the Best Western in Seward and I will have to give it a 5 star for people and accommodations.

One of the few drawbacks of booking the cruise late. Not many hotels choices left. 😂

That's why I stopped him and asked him to verify it.  I was under the impression they all had the same power plants.  He was adamant they did not.

Gotcha, just seems odd. Especially since the ships tend to be built around the power plants.

I do recall that some of them added diesels at some time

Radiance was one of them.  An episode of "World's Toughest Fixes - Operation Cruise Ship" does a great job showing them adding that new power plant to her.  Well worth the cost to rent it on Amazon.

Thank you to all who contributed to this thread. It was a great read and a wonderful pictorial!

We also did this same cruise in June of 2018 on the Radiance. A trip to surely remember!

Did anyone do any excursions in Vancouver?

Todd

We did the HOHO bus. It was a lot of fun. We went to Stanley Park and did the Aquarium, went to the Lions Gate Bridge and the taproom, Granville Island. It was a nice day trip. I'm not a great photographer like the others, just photos we have fun with. :classic_biggrin:

Yeah, the options in Seward suck, except maybe the Windsong Lodge. If you come back, stay in Anchorage, lots of great hotels.

Loved re-living the Alaska cruise via 3 different experiences! PCWalton1, great idea having multiple people chime in about their cruises. Twangster, I’ve always wanted to do the zip line in Icy Strait Point, and your videos made me want to even more! Going down into the clouds was crazy, and going down in the sun was beautiful; I can see why it would be awesome to have both experiences and in a single port day!

Thanks, it was fun "sharing" the cruise with the others.
