This is a good way to put it. Obviously every ship has its die hard fans but not enough to fill so many outdated ships, consistently, sailing after sailing.

They were doing just fine before covid

yes, exactly, like so many other things in life and travel.

Travel was extremely strong before and despite the virus, actually remains fairly strong and certainly no reason to think it will not return to that.

I agree, there will be a huge pent up demmand once trave can safely resume.  The future of cruising will be strong, the big question is when will we be able to safely travel again and what will be the status of the cruise lines.  It is quite possible that it takes so long that the cruise lines will have to get rid of ships that they will have a need for when they do resume, just in order to survive.  At that point, capacity may be diminished to a point where prices go way up until they build new capacity.

Every time we go on the Inspiration/Imagination there are many blue card holders. There is almost always a wedding (or two), as well. IMO, Carnival uses the small ships to attract and keep first-time cruisers for a quick getaway. And the crew has told me often they actually prefer the 3/4-day schedule. So, everybody on board is happier than a pig in a poke and has a fantastic time. Maybe the die hard cruisers don't care about the small ships, but I believe Carnival sees a market for these gorgeous workhorses. I love our little 3-day cruises and really miss them. There may come a time when I don't sail Carnival again, but the 3-day jaunts will be awarded an exemption.

Carnival paid cash for the Fantasy class ships and they have been cash cows for many years.  When they leave you he fleet the mgt team will be eatatic at their performance over their life span.

At least they're working. I'm surprised Carnival isn't lining up some European cruises sans Americans.

Their market is really Americans.  IF they could do that, they would do that.

Carnival Corporation owns Costa, AIDA, and P&O, all of whom I'm sure are working on opening up the European market.  They don't need to muddy the waters with the whale tail.

Here goes the Veendam, Maasdam and the Costa neoRomantica. All three most likely will be scrapped. https://www.tradewindsnews.com/cruise-and-ferry/carnival-to-sell-one-costa-cruises-two-holland-ships/2-1-842327

Fascination is bond for Malta so that will be interesting.
Where did you see Imagination was sold, she’s still holding on the other side of the canal, so if she was sold she’s be sailing towards Inspiration in Curaçao by now.
Ecstasy is sailing around Africa but I don’t believe was sold.
Inspiration is either being stripped or is taking on whatever was taken off Fantasy so we shall see soon
But you didn’t name Fantasy who is actually sailing towards Turkey?
Also curious about neoRomantica.

Counting the Ryndam (due to be completed next year), that is a 19% decrease in capacity at for Holland America (5,312 of 28,088 lower berths).

Even if Carnival Cruise Line parts winds up parting with 3 Fantasy class ships, it will only be around a 7.7% reduction in capacity with Mardi Gras coming online. Even then that gap will be mostly closed up in late 2022 (probably early 2023 now) with the second XL ship.
