EU allowing New Zealanders to travel to Europe from tomorrow

 

The European Union has named 14 countries whose citizens are deemed "safe" to be let in from July 1, including Australia, Canada and Japan.

Global international travel and tourism had effectively come to a halt several months ago due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has warned anyone who takes a non-essential trip may need to pay for quarantine when they arrive back in the country.

Australia, Canada and Japan are also among the list of 14 countries the EU has deemed safe.

Europe may deem Australia and NZ as safe but do we deem Europe as safe? Not yet, IMHO.

But Europe has not deemed any of the Gulf countries safe and that is how most Australians and New Zealanders get to Europe😳.

I will not be travelling abroad until quarantine periods are finished with, and travel insurance is available for medical, not necessarily for Covid though).

Probably not at the moment, but I am sure they will do it again once travel between England and Australia can be sustained.

Queensland will open it's borders on 10 July to all states except Victoria.

Not sure how they'll police that. Even if they ask for id, someone could still present a passport to fly here, without address. Unless they change legislation just for this - and then get the airlines onboard - which sounds unlikely.

People coming to Queensland have to fill out a form certifying they haven't been in Victoria for the last 14 days.  Anyone who has been in Victoria has to be quarantined in a hotel for 14 days at their own expense, including Queenslanders. $4000 fine for people who provide false information. 

I know someone who went to Melbourne on business just when the news broke re the outbreaks.  He decided to self isolate at home for 14 days as a precautionary measure.

Lucky he doesn't have to go into quarantine then.

There’s a nice cruise going on 21 Dec 2020 . Silver Explorer, 14 days Dunedin return to the sub Antarctic, ......only $20,000 per person OV or a balcony for $31,000 . Nice ship ,only 188 passengers .

Yeah, I expected something like that. As seen in the past, people can and will lie so it isn't reliable.

That would suit Rod, he prefers the smaller ships. We can have a whip round, OV would do.I can get a deal on one of the Chimu Charters.

Some of the quarantine regimes sound a bit of a farce at present.

Plus exceptions can be organised. Testing is not mandatory in all states.

It was disturbing to hear some of the reports from people locked in their small rooms with no exercise or fresh air for 14 days.

There were also reports of difficulties with prompt medical attention for some.

In Perth a man was extremely ill and ambulances were sent away, eventually his wife contacted her children in another state who reported it to police and said if ambulance and transport to hospital was denied again they would attend and it would be done.

Understand about infection control measures but it seems ad hoc at present.

The reports from Melbourne alleging security were having sex on duty??

Some of the hotels were for people other than travellers, people who needed a place to avoid passing it on to their family or vulnerable people. Hospital staff.

Homeless people were also given rooms at some places.

As I'm from Perth I checked this case it was at the end of March when things were just starting for quarantine...

I do question as a retired nurse why the wife didn't ring an ambulance after the first knock back on the phone from the hotel doctor. That's what I would have done and then notified the hotel the ambulance was on it's way. Why the daughter did it from Sydney makes no sense.

 

A friend returned from Canada a few weeks ago and he and his daughter did the two week quarantine. They said it was fine. Sure it would have been nice to windows that open or a balcony but they were happy to be back in Australia.

This is how easy the virus got out of control in Melbourne. One person (selfish Idiot) not following the instructions.

The hotels where there have been problems are for quarantined travellers only.

And Vic Govt, did security on the cheap, as the old saying goes..hate to say it..pay peanuts..you get monkeys. Allegedly no tenders for the hotel security sought, if so, there is no.1 mistake.👮‍♂️

It does seem that way Les. No excuse for the rubbish that has occured here. I read a post on another forum (not CC but an AFL one) a few days ago before this all came out about the security guards. The poster is in employment services and said that he had been contacted by multiple 'dodgy' security firms looking for young people with security and the 10k wage subsidy. These firms are in charge of securing the hotels where recent arrivals stay and they are willing to take people with zero experience and offer no training.The contracts went to the lowest bidder and there has been zero oversight. It was all organised extremely quickly but more needed to be done. Surely government departments had the resources to hire, run and oversee the program.

Thanks young Leigh, now there are prison officers, plus defence force people overseen by police doing the job, correctly and with diligence, one would hope.
