Search engine

Recommended Posts

I have been chided on forums for lacking search skills.  I have waded through pages looking for info before posting an inquiry.

Is there a search engine inside the forum to enter ie "San Diego hotel"? The big search magnifier certainly doesn't work for that.

I don't see a search engine inside the forum such as tripadvisor has on their forums (and I can navigate searches easy there)

Or is wading the only way to get there so as not to bother readers with repetitive questions?

Slightly below that big magnifying glass (under your username) in the upper right, THAT search box, when you click on it, gives you options on where to search

It varies based on your browser and system. It is frustrating to me that I don't seem to have the same options as the poster above. I don't seem to have as much specificity on my MacBook Pro using Chrome as I do on my work computer (Lenovo) using Chrome. Or using IE for that matter, which is another default browser available on that computer.

It is also different on phones than on computers.

The first thing to note is that you don't want the search at the top of the screen, which on my Windows computer using Chrome has a box that says "Search ships, destinations, etc." This is the Cruise Critic search, not the forums search. The forums search can be found below that search, on the right hand side, under your login name. It shows an oval with "Search..." in it. Note that unlike the Cruise Critic search, which stays at the top of the page, this one scrolls, so you need to scroll up to the top of the page to see it. Don't just enter your search term. Click in the box first, and a drop down menu appears as shown in Shmoo Here's picture. Select where you want to look, typically "This Forum" or maybe even "This Topic". Then put in your term, in quotes as you show. For "San Diego Hotels", I might go to the West Coast Departures in the Home Ports section, and search in that forum. I might first just search for "San Diego" or maybe "San Diego Hotel", because using "Hotels" will exclude anything that doesn't actually have the plural in the text.

Along with the other selections I would search in two places or post questions in the one of the boards below.

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/315-west-coast-departures/

which has these results

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/search/?q="San Diego hotel"&quick=1

or

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/142-california-coastal-pacific-northwest/

which didn't have any results

I was only using "San Diego hotel" as an example of a search.

I do know to be in the correct forum relative to my search.

Thanks all for the earlier tips - definitely helpful.
