What is DW and DH?

I've been meaning to ask for years. I get that it means spouse but what do the letters stand for?

Most times I think they mean:  DW = Dear Wife,  DH = Dumb Husband.   At least thats how it is used at this home.

Thanks for finally clearing it up for me. For some reason I thought the D was for "designated" - no idea why.

Maybe from baseball's "designated hitter"?

 

You may also sometimes see DD, DS, DSil, DBil, etc where the S means either son or sister

Maybe because if they actually do play major league baseball this year, the DH will be used in the NL as well as the AL, so it has been in the news.

 

I always read the D as darling, but see dear as an acceptable alternative.
