They should be upfront about Inspiration and Fantasy soon

For the most part the OBC will be used for the auto-tips, drinks,  and maybe casino if that is allowed. This will cost Carnival but they have planned for that. The price increases should cover the OBC but this does not mean Carnival is not in jeopardy of floundering if the shutdown continues much longer.

$600 OBC costs the cruise line much less than that and is monopoly money to cruisers. Onboard spend will go up, sometimes more than the $600. What's not to love?

I disagree - OBS will not exceed $600 - people willstop spending when they reach $599.

It's good enough reason for people to book Cruises, which they know will not sail; in order to get the free $600 OBC when The Cruise is inevitably cancelled.

We had a Holland Cruise cancelled and they offered us future cruise credit for 125%  plus an onboard credit of $250

Not a chance. Most people prefer to enjoy their cruises and not obsess over counting pennies.

Go to the Royal Caribbean board and look for the Frugal Cruising thread. Also I have personally seen a couple on a Carnival cruise - having a very vivid argument because the wife wanted to order a Coke, and the husband was adamant that he was not going to spend a dine.

 

Have you never seen the long lines at guest services removing their gratuities on the last night?

I hear more debate by people insisting they could not have had a $1000 liquor bill. Cheap people are going to be cheap. Typically the more "experienced" cruisers. Novice cruisers don't sweat the small stuff.

I actually could see Cheers! becoming more popular with cruisers who have piles of onboard credit. Why worry about $5 or $10 day discount for buying it in advance when you have $600 of house money?

 

That said, I could see the price for Cheers being raised another $10/day by the time sailing resumes.

Photos from Aliaga, Turkey, show that RCCL's former Monarch of the Seas is now beached for scrapping.  The former Sovereign of the Seas is also at Aliaga and awaiting the same fate.  Also looks like Carnival's Fantasy and Inspiration will be there soon.

 

I think we're going to see ship recycling happen at a rate that we haven't seen since the oil crisis of 1973 where dozens of former passenger ships went to the scrappers.

So sad to see! We enjoyed many wonderful cruises on Monarch. Lovely, although lengthy, dinners with the Captain and Hotel Directors. Great service and friendly crew. She will be missed by so many. A passing era of cruising.

They have to get there first.  Fantasy is still in the Atlantic,a coule of days from the Straits of Gibraltar.   Inspiration quite far behind her.  Sovereign will be next.  Interesting that Monarch may be beached, but her AIS is still sending, and destination is Cartagena...EM

Maybe we as cruise passengers should be pushing for Carnival and other cruise companies to opt for a more environmentally sustainable scrapping of the ships than what is carried out in Turkey.

As I understand it, ship recyclers don't take ownership until the ship is beached, so a ship isn't really sold until then. The original owner can still shop around.
