I believe my ideal vacation would be to spend days in Rome focusing on nothing but these sites.  Special access would be incredible!!!

LOL, maybe I should start a boutique travel business when I retire.

So far, by dint of careful local arrangements or private tours I've been able to arrange access to:

  • Several houses and other buildings in Pompeii that are not normally open to the public.
  • Inside visits to the "round" temple (Temple of Hercules, sometimes called the Temple of Vesta" in Rome and the more traditional looking Temple of Portunus which is next door. Both of these temples are near the "Mouth of Truth" in the ancient Forum Boarium.

  • The mithraeum located under the Circus Maximus

  • The crypt and roof top of the church (San Nicola in Carcere) that is built out of the ruins of two Roman temples:

Inside visit to the "pyramid" tomb of Gaius Cestius, who served as Rome's Egyptian governor:

  • And more, including recently a visit to off-limits areas of the Catacombs that contain Roman republican era tombs (pagan, not Christian) that pre-date the later Christian burials -- guided by the archaeologist who researched them and published on them:
