Aplmac Posted March 18, 2020 #27 Share Posted March 18, 2020 Two hours ago I passed by Carlisle Bay, here in Barbados. Oh man there's a small raft of cruise ships out there - parked up for now! with minimal crew on board to keep the place afloat, I guess? Some are simply anchored (for free?) in Carlisle Bay some are docked in the Bridgetown Port -and are presumably paying berthing fees? ______________________________________ The photo of the solo ship out in the Bay.. that's AZURA - P&O Cruises. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Azura

Rare Essiesmom Posted March 18, 2020 #30 Share Posted March 18, 2020 Interesting article about laying u https://www.cruiseindustrynews.com/cruise-news/22623-cruise-lay-up-best-practices-be-ready-to-enter-service.html Stating that you have to keep systems running, flushing toilets daily and running water...It stand to reason that it is a good idea to release your crew from their quarters and have them stay in the cabins (as Edge is doing). They will serve multiple ships in a given week. So three ships working from one terminal can not return to this one terminal to be 'parked'. You suggest each airplane can just return to their home airport and park at the terminal .... NOT! On the other hand, a cruise ship can't be pushed to a corner of the airport, lights turned off and doors locked. Some will get pier space but I suspect a cruise-line will secure a pier and then anchor a couple of ships nearby and rotate them around .... anchoring costs 'nothing' but there are issues of waste disposal and water bunkering etc etc ...... (you don't want to 'make water' close to shore .....) If you look at the Port Everglades ship schedule you already see this happening . . . Want to really see what's happening ..... I'm watching the activity at MarineTraffic.com ..... Provided that the water is fairly calm (i.e. inside a protected port) it is possible to lash ships together, side by side, with one of them lashed to the dockside. shipgeeks Posted March 19, 2020 #38 Share Posted March 19, 2020 I, for one, find it interesting and informative. Thank you, OP. It has been interesting watching the port webcams, and seeing the ships head out to an anchorage, switch places with another ship, etc. And very interesting to note how many people are watching at any time. Lots!

Luckiestmanonearth Posted March 20, 2020 #43 Share Posted March 20, 2020 We were on the last cruise on the Celebrity Edge before everything got shut down and know that they kept all their staff onboard and offered them opportunity to stay in the regular rooms and enjoy a mini vacation of sorts. They may have headed to a private island to dock but not sure

Aplmac Posted March 23, 2020 #49 Share Posted March 23, 2020 Here's a link to a local Barbados newspaper article talking about the cruise ships temporarily docked here https://www.nationnews.com/nationnews/news/244545/positives-relationship-cruise-sector The interesting bit is one short paragraph, below where our Minister of Tourism alludes to something I found myself wondering about, a few days ago - the good possibility that this Summer's Med Cruise Season is a BUST! Symmonds is hopeful there is an option for an expanded cruise itinerary to include the summer - when the vessels traditionally go to the Mediterranean. Normally ships will start crossing the Atlantic in April, and remain in the Med until October. Will they do so, this year? with Europe a mess of Covid-19?
