WeMissSeaView Posted November 2, 2020 #151 Share Posted November 2, 2020 I have sailed on three of those ships and five times on the Monarch. Very sad to see.
TheBucketLister Posted November 2, 2020 #152 Share Posted November 2, 2020 Very sad. Our first cruise was on the Fantasy, second was the Monarch, and our third was on the Sovereign. All were back between 1996-1998.

Biker19 Posted November 24, 2020 #155 Share Posted November 24, 2020 ^ That's a different section of Aliaga from other previous ships - a second CMV ship (Marco Polo) is due there in a week+.
Biker19 Posted November 25, 2020 #156 Share Posted November 25, 2020 There's a quick peek in this video (Astor beaching) of the other section of Aliaga with cruise ships - doesn't look like meaningful progress lately. https://www.facebook.com/ValerkaSok/videos/4140386062644483

The old Carnival Celebration was my first cruise 31 1/2 years ago. That ship has been sailing a long time and it has not been looking so good the last couple of years. That's a very shallow beach and they can only bring the ships in so far. I assume they eventually drag them further up the beach but they could start dismantling a ways out like this one. WeMissSeaView Posted December 3, 2020 #163 Share Posted December 3, 2020 I wish that yard had a cam that we could check on the ships when we wanted. Would like to see what is left of the Sovereign and Monarch.
Biker19 Posted December 18, 2020 #164 Share Posted December 18, 2020 The work on commercial vessels seem to be progressing faster than the cruise ships.

Biker19 Posted December 19, 2020 #166 Share Posted December 19, 2020 (edited) ^ that last picture must not have been recent as this sat pic seems to show Sovereign almost gone. There might soon be room for another ship. Edited December 19, 2020 by Biker19

Rare bobmacliberty Posted December 21, 2020 #168 Share Posted December 21, 2020 Alang looks like a MUCH bigger scrap area than Aliaga. There are ships spread across about 6 miles of beach at Alang on Google Maps. Several oil platforms there as well. While looking for info on Alang, I found a link to a 2004 documentary called "Shipbreakers", that's focused on Alang. Haven't watched it yet but many of the YouTube comments are about exploiting the people who do this work. (14) Shipbreakers - YouTube

WeMissSeaView Posted January 14, 2021 #173 Share Posted January 14, 2021 Interesting. Someone forgot to turn off the transponder on the Marco Polo even though it is showing the location as beached.
